give me good movement to fuck around the empty space in and we're good
problem is too many open worlds are just riding a horse across a meadow

Good movement does not actually make the game better. This is an enduring myth. In reality what matters is how the game is designed around its movement, I would rather have a game where I move slowly and don't have many movement options but is overall a more tactical and thought provoking game that challenges the player to overcome hazards in spite of its movement limitations than "do the cool speed strat that gets boring halfway through the game (at best)." Unironically this is why Mario 64 has had far from a uniformly positive impact on the industry and vidya discussion.

Spiderman ps4 is the only open world collectible-slop filled game that I have ever 100%ed for this reason alone. Movement makes or breaks your game.

These.
And fuck Bethesda style "fast travel" >>716468770.
Open world are just bigger corridors where you can avoid enemies and don't have gates every 10 minutes.

That's why Assassin's Creed are great despite overusing the collectible-slop recipe, you are constantly on the move jumping and looking for a path (or a pile of hay to jump in but that's QoL).
I would still improve the fuck out of AC games by making mechanics to really require hide in the crowd.

nta but good post. Another problem with movement systems is that, mathematically, good movement is solely there to delete large chunks of negative space. if you have the perfect ration of negative space and movement, then there's literal zero reason to have that much negative space to begin with aside from "to feel fast".

when I finally started playing open world games without hud and without fast travel my life changed for the better.

Why do you guys bring this shit up now when this has been the case since Elder Scrolls and other games
The point of open world games is the scale of the world and seeing all sorts of shit to run toward on the horizon, that's why Elden Ring blew everyone out of the fucking door
All of us dreamed of going on adventures of our own when we were children and now that videogames have the means to make that scale real you piss your pants
>Its too empty
If there was shit every 10 feet the world would look fucking terrible and cluttered and there wouldn't be any substance to the rewards if they jingled keys in your face 24/7
>Travel just wastes time
You have horses/vehicles/fast travel/etc and the point is to give players more of the world to examine whilst they travel somewhere and create a mental checklist of things to explore after their next objective
>i cant think of an actually good thread so I decided to bait and argue in bad faith with the rest of everyone
and now we reach the real reason you're all here because you're all contrarians stuck cyclically baiting each other for years and years craving the stockholm syndrome from it all

Faggots the lot of you

I just need a vehicular game with the physics of Nuclear Option, where flying around feel like a constant games of avoiding radar, missiles and hiding your signatures.

>Good movement does not actually make the game better.
>what matters is how the game is designed around its movement
That's what "Good movement" means, disingenuous smartass.

>I would rather have a game where I move slowly and don't have many movement
Speed is irrelevant.

>than "do the cool speed strat that gets boring halfway through the game (at best)."
But that's like... just your opinion anon.
Everyone's tastes are different.
No matter ho much you dislike having to move around, you won't convince anyone that games should be limited to slow, flat, no-jump, movements in a corridor.

>Mario 64
I hate Nintendo, but Mario 64 was still a superb demonstration of the power of inertia-driven movement mechanic.

gated open is the best, especially when you need to get/do something specific to get through to an area, like obtaining a key, killing a boss or solving a puzzle

No better was this illustrated than with elden ring.
It was literally just a souls game but with more unnecessary walking between things.

>>716468770
Except this is a linear representation of how your time playing the game is spent. Think of the OP as a timeline, not an image.

it was cool when devs were competent enough to put cool shit in the middle. it was also cool when we were seeing huge, genuinely impressive open worlds for the first time. after that? no. it's been enshittified, now it's just a faggot ass excuse to stretch a game out for engagement numbers and hours on steam
