I believe ultra violent/gory scenes are disgusting and ruin what could otherwise be good games. I think I would've enjoyed the gameplay in pic related, I bought it for cheap when it was on sale, but I stopped playing after seeing some of the glory kill animations because it just made the experience unpleasant for me.

I'm not some puritanical who thinks we need to protect the children or whatever, I just think that heavily gory and extremely violent scenes are gross. I see it as perverse and almost fetishistic - to me it is not dissimilar to just randomly scattering hardcore scat scenes throughout the game. It adds nothing to the experience and only serves to appease people with bizarre fetishes.

I don't necessarily think extreme violence should be banned in games, but if you do enjoy these types of scenes I think there is probably something wrong with you. I am not against violence/gore in video games as a whole, but I think that it needs to serve a purpose. Here, and in games like mortal kombat, I think it is nothing more than pornographic. Games like tekken and halo are examples of games in the same genres but with what I consider to be an acceptable level of violence/gore. Players who push for and enjoy things more like MK/Doom are perverse.

I just find the whole idea of creating a fantasy world where you have to do this to evil demons as still somewhat absurd and fetishistic. I am on the fence for things like resident evil/other zombie games. In those I think the violence and gore serves a purpose in scaring the player as they are meant to be horror games, but I still think it's pretty weird to create that fantasy world in such a way in the first place. But doom has no intention of being a horror game, it is a power fantasy where you are meant to be justified in killing things and performing horrifically violent acts, and I view it as a gross fantasy.

The gore is the fun part.

I just think the people who create and enjoy this type of media are twisted and have something wrong with them, and it ruins a media property that could otherwise be good.
