>It's crazy how Rare went from a shovelware mill to a high quality developer to an incompetent developer across just 10 years.
Their licenseshit was rushed
Nobody wants to make a bad game and the vast majority of crappy licenseshit is like that because they have even shittier deadlines and inferior funding compared to non licenseshit games.
As for Rare of today, they couldn't adapt to changing times where teams that used to require barely people into the double digits now require three digits on average to get one game made.

Their reputation was a guarantee people were going to try their games and spread the word if they were fun.

One of their big selling points was tech innovation. This did not scale well over time, and management was in shambled after MS buyout. By the time things stabilized things has ballooned way too far in the 2010s.

Tell me a 3rd Banjo, a 2nd Conker, a 2nd Diddy Kong, or a sequel to Perfect Dark, in exactly the same engines and styles wouldn't sell.

SNES stuff lingering into the 64 era would have sold too. I did not toss my older consoles into the trash just because I bought the *better* one. Moving gen to gen has been foolish with the all or nothing approach of the companies selling them.

We actually have to kinda blame Rare because they willingly agreed to Miyamoto's offer because they didn't have enough faith in Dinosaur Planet as its own thing so late into the N64 lifespan with the GCN on the horizon. Straight from the director's mouth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO7ocvmoDBc

It's very fitting to post this in a Diddy Kong Racing thread because Lee also directed this game and it too similarly had a Nintendo character shoehorned onto what was originally Timber's game at the last minute to make it sell better. The interview makes it obvious he and Rare likely wanted to make the same lightning strike twice with the DP->SFA change.

Honestly, I don't think Rare is a bad studio that makes shitty games but rather one that just needs better management steering the ship.
I enjoy riffing on Kinect Sports as much as the next guy but Rare wanting to pursue those games makes so much more sense when you look at their history as a company and for what it was worth, those games were the best you could have possibly gotten with that peripheral in mind.
Nuts & Bolts isn't flawless but most of the scathing reception it has mostly comes from being attached to the Banjo Kazooie IP
I'm not even franchise begging here because the concern is less
>Make games that bring back older genres and IPs
And more
>Make new games period
They haven't released anything new since 2018
I fully get that Sea of Thieves is keeping the studio afloat and I respect the passion the team has for it but even if Everwild wasn't the biggest thing I was looking forward to, I'm still disappointed that the first non-Kinect, non-live service game from the studio was an unfocused mess that got axed

I think part of their chemistry worked was because that Nintendo unlike Microsoft actually made games themselves
By all accounts Microsoft was very hands off and on paper that sounds good, people HATE no-talent publishers pulling off creative meddling; just look at the horror stories with EA. But with Rare for all their ambition and creativity they worked better when they had someone outside with a similar design philosophy bouncing off ideas and feedback.
Was it flawless?
Fuck no, just look up Shiggy wanting to tone down Goldeneye's violence and suggested James Bond visited every npc you gunned down at a hospital but the fact that there was actual back and forth communication to begin with made things better.

I donโ€™t think I did anything with that input. The second point was, he felt the game was too tragic, with all the killing. They're OP when you learn them. Hopping on every turn and boost is key and snaking is easy to do. I struggle more with the plane and barrel rolling.

bro I never got to the space levels. Although to be fair I never owned it, just rented it a couple of times. The game gets really tricky and it can take a lot of time grinding out the silver coin challenges and Wizpig

No you see the only way they could put K. Rool into Bananza was by detaining him in a cell for years

That actually happens.

A barrel roll counts as a boost, and you can do it repeatedly.

The fact this game has NEVER been ported aside from the weird DS remake is a travesty. I could somewhat get it in the past when Rare wasn't working with Nintendo much, but we're nearly four years into N64 Online without any peep on the game coming over. With DK64 probably coming, the only other massive Rare holdover is Conker. We got Goldeneye before DKR. How the hell does that happen?

Same reason why it's taking Smash 64 and the remaining Wario Land games for so long
They don't want to blow their load too fast and space out releases to maintain interest

Not sure but I highly doubt Conker will ever be released officially on anything Nintendo again

Actually, you will note that the final battle with K. Rool is just a giant room of shit, much like that shit monster from Conker.

Something about this game really captured me as a kid. It's surprisingly challenging which made it a perfect autism sink for an 11-year-old with too much time on his hands. There were enough tough parts you really needed to experiment, but also enough going on you rarely got completely hung up at one particular bit. It looked and sounded pretty good too.
It's one of the few games from my childhood I haven't revisited. Can anyone say how the challenge compares to F-Zero GX?

I prefer the track design and straightforward gameplay of Mickey's Speedway USA. But they both fall short to Mario Kart 64 because they have no mini-turbos.
