>>716497857 (OP) Top right picture's pipe is 'procedural', it's basically a fancy brush that gets swapped into pre-assembled modular meshes. One of Source 2's new features which I thought was neat.
>>716501412 It is hilarious because the game looks no where as sharp with the valve index itself. This image looks like it was taken from the mod that lets you play it off of a monitor.
>>716504475 It looks even better because it's in 3D. Maybe your headset just makes everything look like shit

I really thought I should finally be able to handle this game at 150% resolution scaling max settings at 144hz on my Valve Index now that I have a 5090, but nope, still dropping frames from GPU being maxed out at times. VR without eye tracked foveated rendering is hopeless. Imagine if I had one of these newer screens with higher resolution. Index is only 1440x1600 per eye. Newer headsets are well into the 2k x 2k territory.
>>716497943 Either you're saying HLA looks bad or you're saying it looks good and you think it doesn't use PBR materials. Either way you're wrong, because it uses PBR.
>>716499825 This, hotspot materials and being able to easily model stuff in-editor with tools that are better for building geo than Blender would make Source 2 the superior engine if we actually had proper dev tools

>>716504475 Weirdly enough, I had a slightly similar experience. It looked great, but pictures and videos made it look more perfect and realistic than it is in reality. VR games have to look good up close, so when you're looking at images of it instead of actually being in the game world, it looks even better.

All these people self-reporting the fact they are not wearing their glasses in VR by saying it doesn't look that sharp on an Index
>>716506203 If this thing is more powerful than a deck then I might buy one just to play flatscreen vidya on it since VR is still a massive fucking meme. There are maybe 4 games worth playing that are "exclusive" to VR and they were all released several years ago now.
>>716506965 I played it on the Quest 3 and the sharpness wasn't an issue. In fact there were no issues, it just looked more photorealistic in flat images.

>>716500270 Not really but there's a smaller, lighter headset on the way Devs aren't making many games because the installbase is low but if you make a game as an indie you're basically guaranteed SOME sales because VR players are starving for content that isn't Beat Saber or VRChat
>>716507091 >anyone without an infinite budget to accomplish. Alyx probably had a budget of 50 million or so, meanwhile triple A games with budgets in the hundreds of millions look and run like shit.
>>716505760 No, pipeline is like that (AFAIK). People create PBR to replicate nature. Turns out it require effort. Therefore, "PBR is great for stylized Pixar shit", and here we are.

>>716507003 The Index wands are ultra bulky because of the tracking ring and the size of the actual wand, going to a Quest-style format is good, and iirc the finger tracking is done through headset now so no reason to be so bulky
>>716509859 >ultra bulky They each weigh about the same as a banana, are you telling me you're so weak you could get exhausted swinging bananas around?
