Dratini is native to Kanto, logically the only way you'd encounter a wild member of it's evolution line in a different region is if the adult form migrated there

left. the problem is that there are too many pokemon and/or you can catch older generations in the newer games. it discourages obtaining and using the newer pokemon. also shit franchise btw

Left especially when you wanted strong pokemon back in the day. Nowadays there’s too many strong pokemon, the new ones are all pretty good at max evo and very few are just shit to be shit. Even the dung beetle is good.

Considering Dragon is a shitty attacking type and Dragon/Flying is a shitty defending type, grinding all the way to 55 for a strong but subpar choice is kinda shit

Exactly. Back in the day, finding a strong Pokémon was like winning the lottery-either you stuck with your lame Route 1 rodent or crawled through the Safari Zone praying for something that didn’t suck. Now every region’s full of pseudo-legends with 3-stage evolutions, perfect stat spreads, and some new gimmick typing combo. Power creep killed off the joy of raising garbage mons into underdog heroes. Even the dung beetle has base stats that’d make Gyarados jealous.

The pseudos usually are not designed well from a story playthrough perspective. You get them too late for them to matter for the majority of the game, especially if you have to spend a 4 hour detour leveling them up to the rest of your party just for them to do something in the last few battles. Getting them earlier doesn't help much either since their unevolved forms are usually dogshit and they take more xp to level than average, only for you to get something overpowered toward the end. The only thing worse than them is getting an actual legendary early on, which GF has done multiple times.
Also dragonite is ass in gen 1 and the gen 1 remakes.

Deino and Noibat too, for that matter, are cute and I like what they evolve into, but they are too much of a hassle to use. Especially in games where you can catch them early.

The Pokemon economy is oversaturated. It's part of the reason why each new gen locks out various parts of the global pokedex

Last time I played Gold on GBC i tried to use Dratini for my playthrough by grinding the game corner for it, can confirm it was pretty much useless for the entire game because it had to battle twice as much as anything else to level up.
The old games are poorly designed in general, the best strategy is just to use one strong Pokemon (usually your starter but you can also use Gyarados or Kadabra or something) and just one shot everything.

Dragon Rage raped everything with less than 80 HP which is so many Pokemon in the early and even middle game. Grinding with Dratini was piss-easy and when it becomes Dragonair it can use the stronger moves well while still softening them up or finishing them off with Dragon Rage. And in HGSS you can have Larvitar join it when you get to the Safari Zone and have two strong pseudos.

i don't think that makes them bad design, it makes them boss encounters. the champion will use pseudos while the player will likely overlook them due to their weakness in the maingame (at least before wiki shit). after they see how it pushes their shit in, they might train one for the postgame.

Dratini is made of paper and slow so have fun going back to the Pokemon center every 2 minutes. Of course if you're playing on emulator at x50 speed you can just brute force I guess

Yeah, but back in that era they didn't need to model and animate over 1000 pokemon and the female/male differences plus shiny variants.
It's all about money and time, if they did the initial leg work in sword and shield they'd only needed to add the new ones to the new games, but it seems that's too much to ask from the biggest media franchise on earth.

Psuedos weren't really viable for a playthrough until Gen 4 with Gabite and Garchomp. It's a bit telling, just how many teams had this line as part of its makeup.

They've been using the same models since x and y, and (mostly) the same animations too. The whole point of those models was that they'd be future proofing them.

Gamefreak doesnt even pretend to care about single player anymore, its just a railroad to the online/tournament stuff (which doesnt matter because they all cheat and dont even play the singleplayer)

In the context of the game it's in it's fine, the wild Dratini are close to evolving anyway because it's the very last area in the game before the finale.

They're, at a glance, trying to change this with the upcoming Pokemon Champions by making the competitive aspects of the game its own dedicated game... but that's not releasing until next year and there's no telling if it will actually be a suitable replacement that takes hold. People are speculating/hoping this means Gamefreak will be able to focus more on the single player and overall quality of the mainline games, but that just sounds way too unrealistic given Gamefreaks lazy, shameful track record.
