There were always black people in Dragonlance. They were from Northern Ergoth and had their own knights, called cavaliers. Not many went to join the Knights of Solamnia, as the Solamnic Order had splintered off from the old Empire of Ergoth. Mostly they were seafaring peoples, with a few outliers like the blacksmith who forged the Dragonlances of the modern age, though even he was a seaman at first, and learned smithing from the seafaring minotaurs or something.

The only one that even comes close to the feel these kinds of old fantasy artwork pieces have is Dragon's Dogma. The pawn chatter adds a ton to that feeling, and I'm sad the arisen doesn't respond to them.
