Gives you an immediate goal and conflict (get the fuck out of prison) to start the game and (in the case of elder scrolls) somewhat allows for a more ambiguous and flexible backstory.

blank slate but helps to set the game in motion by having you powerless while the game throws exposition at you and then forces you to do a tutorial section while escaping
