Video games aren't productive or anything but they're not any worse than what most people spend their leisure time doing really. There's no need to be touchy and butthurt about it either way just because older generations see you as playing with toys for children for excessive amounts of time.

In a sense, but it's not a kind of addiction, it's just that there isn't much space in society for an average young person to grow. There's no easy entry-level jobs to get started, no motivation or encouragement to succeed if the money is shit, or any kind of guarantee that there will be a place for them in that society when they're an adult because any sense of community is eroded away.
So some people will get really into video games, the 2000 hours in game X kind, because it gave them the ability and space to get good at something there. All without having to leave the house and risk getting stabbed by a criminal who the court will feel sorry for.
