Evangelion is the only good mecha anime and only because it deconstructed the genre. All the other ones are glorified toy commercials.

Eva is good, great even, but it didn't deconstruct anything
Hell, it actively built on tropes already established by Tomino and others
Evangelion's most important innovation was the fact that they marketed the girls instead of the robots because the evas were initially deemed too hard to make figures and toys out of due to their overly angular designs and weird proportions
