Paizo is just fairly loose with their license, they're not even afraid to hand it out to kickstarters with high chances to fail like the Pathfinder MMO. It just sucks that there's just not a lot of industry interest in the brand to get some more capable studios to make a solid budget Pathfinder 2E CRPG because I do feel like the ruleset and customization would just resonate very well with the video game playing audience if just the right team was able to come together to make it happen.

It only came out yesterday so people are still learning the meta and kinks. Being built of Pathfinder2e, it is far more balanced and meant to be fully compatible with that game, but they purposely postponed doing any of the "big" systems that they fucked the first time. So no advanced hacking, no tactical starship combat, no mechs. Since Starfinder is handled by a separate team compared to Pathfinder, they still need to prove themselves on such, so we just don't know.
>Also do they have a front-line caster class?
Yes and no? 2e casters are far less potent compared to any other system past or present. Plus a "frontline" in Starfinder isn't really a thing just because....everyone is packing heat, guns and lasers are just standard. But not only the base Starfinder2e casters, the Mystic and Witchwarper, are bulkier to the standard 2e on, they are currently regarded as just 2 of the best casters in the system so far, next to Animist and Witch.

There are melee gishes in the 2e -Finder games like Magus, Animist, and Warpriest Cleric. Warpriest is very much a frontliner support. But they aren't going to be super powerful or Protagonist Syndrome-prone. You gotta experiment and learn the kinks of the games before you can expect to just win since gishes are very much big targets of the nerf bat.

>>717033221
Owlcat still works with Paizo. They are even said they are up to making a 2e game (to my surprise as well, figured they just hated the system). They're just backlogged.

It's not a question of "why", but "when". Even 1e took a good number of years to get mech rules. It just the fact that SF1e pretty much died-on-impact because of how badly they botched rules like starship combat (it literally outscaled your skill ranks at launch, it became far harder to pilot the further you level). So they want to genuinely get it right, especially since SF2e is a little rushed out the market because of the OGL drama (the GM guide comes out next month, to illustrate the point).

For 2e, they want to take their time with all the tech stuff and systems that are hard to get right in a tabletop setting.

Starfinder 1e is fairly non-woke for the sourcebooks, a little woke for the adventures. Most obnoxious bit is in Temple of the Twelve where your party needs to find out where a college professor went, and the only possible way to get access to the professor's files is to get a completely unrelated professor to recant their sociological research as a favor to the dean because the press found it politically offensive. Temple of the Twelve is quite honestly the worst Starfinder adventure written and I'm disappointed they didn't take the chance with the omnibus release of Dead Suns to rewrite it. On top of the woke stuff there's an huge stretch in the middle of the adventure where the players just make fifteen to twenty survival rolls then fight a dinosaur then make ten more survival rolls then fight another dinosaur.

So really its just a space sourcebook for Pathfinder 2e.

I mean, I can see being paranoid because the launch version of the starship rules for 1e made the game doa for a lot of people, but you'd think they'd at least give people a converted version of the final starship rules.

Hacking rules I can see leaving out because those were legitimately insane and showcased the fundamental problem of trying to apply D&D levels to sci-fi equipment.

I mean, they made an Earth 2 style adventure path without including a long screed about the evils of colonialism, so that alone puts them above their contemporaries.

From what I recall of SF1e, mystic and technologist were both 3/4 casters, and witchwarper was the only full caster in the game. Technologist has some decent damage spells but is mostly useful for utility spells and engineering skillmonkey.
Best AoE damage in the game was actually Soldier I believe. Every assault rifle in the game had an optional cone aoe fire mode, and there was a Soldier specialization built around tossing grenades and basically always having extra grenades in their backpack.

Even I agree it might have been a bit too early to drop SF2e. Again, I think the OGL issues put a fire under their asses and they needed to make sure the SF team had something to do that isn't a (hypothetical) legal minefield. So they sort of rushed out SF2e.
The GM Core releases next month has a fill-in, narrative-based starship combat rules. More than likely just battle stations and skill checks to get you past simple skirmishes. Tactical stuff is probably coming next year, alongside Technomancer and Mechanic.

>>717038095
>>717037397
Mystic is a healer with their own point pool and are full casters now (though every caster now have somewhat properly scaling Class DCs to fire AOE weapons compared to Pathfinder casters). Spontaneous casters with Primal/Occult/Divine variants.
Technomancer is also going to be a full caster but still experimenting with the skillmonkeys.
Witchwarper is very much the best aoe blaster, though long range is a bit off key thanks to their warp zone mechanic where they get a pocket reality that amps up their spellcasting powers.
Soldier is still the best AOE damage blaster. Give them a heavy weapon and watch them BTFO pretty much everything and be fucking immortal with their HP and armor.

Ugh. I mean, I guess they kind of fit better for most Starfinder scenarios but still kind of lame.

Biggest issue with starship combat in CRPGs I feel is that it's hard to strike a good balance between ship classes. The player fantasy is Luke Skywalker in an X-wing escorting the Millenium Falcon, but 9 times out of 10 in a CRPG that winds up with the starfighter player dead. The game needs to be well setup to have the players in a medium ship fighting a few fighters and maybe one larger ship, and give options so a player in a separate fighter can contribute and be rescued if wrecked in the fight.

When Baulder's Gate 3 came out I knew there was a very brief window of time where I could convince my primarily video game playing friends to play a TTRPG with me as the DM. Rather than picking up 5e (because I fucking hate the ruleset) I got us playing PF2e and I've been experiencing in real time my friends get more into the hobby. It's a really good gateway RPG for those players it's really unfortunate there's just not enough money behind the brand to push it into the mainstream without Owlcat having any interest in it.

Yeah, it is one of those logistical issues I don't envy anyone trying to figure out. Running a seafaring campaign really opened my eyes to how...unfun the entire concept of large vehicular combat is, even with an entirely different ruleset.

>>717043596
Witchwarper both takes up the INT/CHA-Arcane(/Occult) caster slot, 2e classes need more space compared to 1e ones, and they are saving all the big tech stuff for next year's major release. Plus if you know Paizo, it is better to not watch them struggle to tackle a shitload of new classes in one year.
In the meantime, Pathfinder2e has the Inventor class which is a more low-tech version of Mechanic, and Technomancer and Mechanic are in active playtest so you can futz about with the actual classes. Just don't expect to see them in the vidya's likely early access release.

Well witchwarper sounds cool, I’m glad they’ve made more full casters from 1e.
In pathfinder I didn’t like how the dedicated blaster class used constitution, because I like building glass cannons in rpgs. Yes I know there’s archetypes to replace it with another stat. Actually now that I think about it, is Pathfinder 2e more accompanying for aoe blasters or is it still like 1e where they are expected to control the battlefield in other ways? I know they nerfed casters a lot.

You have no idea how I'd fucking KILL for a cRPG with art direction more similar to a JRPG

>’m glad they’ve made more full casters from 1e
It does come at the expense of no 2/3rd's casters at launch. 2e doesn't have that kind of spell slot system, every caster is expected to scale up to 10th-Rank Spells. Instead, traditional half/two-third casters are now "Bounded Casters", where they have 4 slots total, 2 of their highest and second-highest spell slot. Think like D&D5e Warlock Pact Magic slots.
Starfinder2e doesn't have any class like that so far or in the near future. So it means casters are stuck casting with an occasional burst fire from a gun if they wanna mix it up but not expected to hit anything.
> is Pathfinder 2e more accompanying for aoe blasters or is it still like 1e where they are expected to control the battlefield
They pretty much double-downed on that idea. Just expecting raw damage out of your casters is not really meta, even if they are still good enough at it. They really want them to be focused on buffing, debuffing, crowd control, and area denial. Soldier is also built like this, just with the heavy weapons essentially running off their CON stat thanks to how Class DCs work.

You can play Mystic as a blaster, it gets access to the Primal (Druid) list with a subclass and it is the squishiest Starfinder2e class (6HP a Level and stuck at Light Armor). The Vitality Network feature means you still can support the team while having all your slots dedicated to Fireball and Carcinization (turn your foe into a crab).

(Witchwarper can also nuke the SHIT out of everything, it is likely the most powerful caster released so far. But they have decent bulk with 8HP and Light Armor training so they aren't exactly what I would call glass cannons).

I think they are making a 2e game? Dragon's Demand?
hopefully it and this turn out good, PF2e/Starfinder need a good kick and I need to find an actual table to play these games instead of just reading rules and bullshit

Ty for the writeup, it’s sad cuz I could only get a good nuke build going in wrath with a specific mythic path and magic items, so no guarantee I could replicate that in other games/campaigns.
Witchwarper is still my best bet I suppose, nukes and long range are worth not being a complete glass cannon.
I heard they added kineticist to 2e, is that the dedicated blaster now?
Anonymous No.717048006 [Report]
>>717047542
Yeah, Kineticist been here for 2 years now and still pretty damn good at blasting. Even beyond the casters as unlike them, they get item bonuses to their impulse attacks, so their direct single-target elemental damage is more consistent than standard casters. Their biggest issue is incompatibility with the rest of the system, as kinetic blasts and impulses aren't typical Strikes and Spells. So they lack synergy with Archetypes or the brand new Commander class.
There are other good damage-dealing casters in 2e that also have bulk. Animist, Oracle, and Druid all have both armor training and good HP scaling alongside strong class options for nuking something. Kineticist is just good at getting to the point with little chaff or effort on your part.

I remember playing this on TTRP once, years ago, and the ship combat was fucking horrendous and the overall system meh.
The ship combat was basically whoever gets scratched first explodes, and landing was an unreasonable check with the massive penalty of "you crash and the ship is fucked".

i dont know where the specific yearning for that taste comes from. bg3 for example is held back immensely by its mediocre artstation character design.
it feels like the characters in those games (im including owlcat in here) have the basics down, they're just missing that extra oomf or soul that really makes a character stand out in a good way that you'd see in a good jrpg. its not like gear design offsets this because gear in these games is often uninspiring or garish in its own way.

the reason why they never caught on in nipland is that they're kind of nonexistant on consoles. i thought larian's console ports might've changed that but it seems to have barely made a splash over there. but japan seems to be trending more towards pc gaming so maybe theres hope one day if some crpg design trends catch on (like how every game had some kind of watered down chemistry system once breath of the wild became popular)
