That's where 'Immersion' comes in, as in deep engagement with the work, like a book that you read and your suspencion of disbelief kicks in. There are 'objective' masterpieces of gaming like Tetris and Counter Strike, but those are more of a craft, to be appreciated the same way as chess. But people still play GTA because they want to drive over people with cars and shoot shit up.

Rockstar games after bully are the definition of wide as an ocean deep as a puddle. Anything you think is an interesting game system that you poke into you find nothing else and further research often leads to you learning from some interviews "Oh yeah we cut back all the mechanics with depth to make release."
