FFXI had the most impact by far on my life of any game I've ever played. My life would probably be completely different had I never discovered this game.

All because my parents took me on a trip to NYC in the early 2000s, and we went to toys R Us in times square. At the bottom they had the video game section and there was a stack of FFXI PS2 and as soon as I saw the box I wanted the game so my dad got it for me. Then the addiction started, I couldn't stop playing the game. I was in high school at the time and it sucked away my entire life, social life, school work, didn't care about any of it I just wanted to play FFXI all day. My grades started failing, I fucked up everything in school and never really recovered. All my friends were in FFXI, I lost all my IRL friends so my friends in the game were my social life. I did eventually quit the game one day in 2008 I think as it was ruining my life, soon after Treasures of Aht Urghan came out. I

So just out of no where I shouted in Jeuno and put everything I could sell in my inventory for sale for 1 gil each and told people to come buy all my stuff I was quitting the game immediately.
Went to my mog house grabbed everything I could as I was swarmed by people buying all my shit. Then I deleted any rare/ex gear. My character was lvl 60+ in most jobs so I had a lot of gear, then I logged out for the final time cancelled the sub and deleted my character and never played again, until I made a new character in 2012 because I was so nostalgic about the time I spent playing it and played it again on that new character for about a year before quitting again. I played that character again back around 2015 but since then haven't touched the game.

I still regret what I did, I wish I never deleted my character... sometimes I wanted to just log back on and talk to my friends again, this was before discord and other shit so saying goodbye was final.

I still listen to the soundtracks for it all the time though.

Something that most Dragon's Dogma players don't seem to realize is that these games are explicitly designed as hiking simulators. DD2 is by multiple orders of magnitude a better hiking simulator than DDDA. Also dragon's dogma's systems and general design aren't well suited for dungeon crawling. But maybe you have a 3D platformer you prefer instead? Tell me what it is. Maybe you think Super Mario 64 is a better 3D platformer? In my opinion Spyro blows Mario out of the water in terms of atmosphere, pleasant graphics, and more fun controls since Spyro's a god damn car with that charge. The brief dialogue that characters have adds personality without bogging you down in cinematics, it's wonderfully done and no other games imitate it. It has very strong surreal level themes, which adds to atmosphere.
(The remake ruins a lot of it btw)

The gameplay is amazing since literally every enemy dies in 1 hit, so you're sprinting all over the fucking place flaming everything and charging everything, taking everything down instantly so the pacing is absolutely fantastic (and you go even faster with super boost pads). That reminds me, F-Zero GX should've been on my list as well.

But it also requires a little bit of skill to play it at a fast pace, it's not a game for babies. Then there's tons of secrets all over levels which are all very open, the level design might be the best I've ever seen. Not quite open world but definitely more open than other 3D platformers. And a crapload of minigames which is divisive among Spyro fans but I think Spyro 2 has a good balance between Spyro 1 and Spyro 3.

there aren't that many gadgets and you can usually get by with a loadout of sky flyer, hoop, slingshot, and stun rod. switch out the least pertinent tool when you need to use the net/RC car/radar. the loadout i gave is not necessarily what you would use as your default if you were speedrunning, but you gotta get through the game normally first (also the first ape escape game is horrible to speedrun because of insane RNG variability in one of the final bosses that can add literal minutes to your run if you are unlucky).
the camera is the thing that probably takes the most getting used to, but it is pretty easy once you get the hang of hitting L1 to center the camera behind the direction spike is facing.
but the games have some of the best music ever and i love all the personalities that they give all the stupid little monkeys. nothing quite hit like it and i am so mad that ape escape never caught on quite like other mascots did.
