yes, it's a good and fun game.
DLC adds some bits and pieces, but I don't think it's required for the first playthrough.
Most of it's postgame anyway

Story is campy, but fun. Obviously has some great meme moments too.
You're playing it more for the combat than anything, which can start of pretty easy, but can pretty intense later on. Has a ton of jobs to try out/mix and match and customize.
I got it on sale and enjoyed it, but would not recommend to someone going into it wanting the typical Final Fantasy quality story.
If you're conflicted, look up some gameplay and see if its up your alley.
There is a fair bit of "post game" content if thats your thing as well, and where some of the most challenging fights can come from.
A friend of mine picked it up on a whim after he saw me playing it and also enjoyed it.

Absolutely. It would be worth it even if it wasn't on sale, though it's discounted by default to encourage getting the DLC so the sale makes it even cheaper. The DLC is mostly endgame and for those that really enjoy it, but you can still use the two new weapons (staff and gun) and five of the seven new jobs before then. It is also extremely worth getting similar to how worthwhile and impactful all the TN DLCs tend to be.

The only thing I would change now is that you don't even have to do Chaos mode if you learned how to play the game, and to emphasize far more the fact that the Warrior of Light set is more than fine for the rest of the game once you get it, just so long as you upgrade it to level 300 as you need to to keep up with the required mission levels in Bahamut.

What level are your jobs, what jobs are you using, what gear are you using, what are your Master Points set to and what Command Abilities are you using? They are only as grindy as you make them and most of what people think requires grinding is a result of them not learning anything about how to actually play the game or use its systems. Partially that is due to the base game not being quite hard enough but it is also largely due to them not even attempting to learn the bare minimum despite them still getting filtered by said base game.

It's disappointing to me that DLC 1 and 2 are just sending you back to the same story missions you just went through with a single new Bahamut cave as the dangling carrot, while DLC 3 includes a single new map that you never encounter again in the Rift Labyrinth as far as I'm aware. By the time you start ramping up the grind in the endless dungeon, you've already played through these tile sets 2-3 times by that point. And that's only on a single playthrough, it's really hard to stomach replaying this game over the years when there is so much underutilized recycling.

While unfortunate, the game offers more than enough to change how you go through them with how many job, class, Job Affinity and weapon combinations become available, all of which drastically change how you approach things. In Bahamut the bosses have updated movesets and Lufenia updates them again, and Bahamut also introduces multiple new gauntlet missions. Aside from being a way to experience all the new boss movesets and all the different floor layouts with new enemy types, the Rift also has the 4 Chaos Fiends to find too. After Rift floor 100 all the bosses change to the Lufenian movesets and several new floors are added including ones from the new map. When you actually consider just how much variety there is in there where it counts without just pointing to the paintjob on the walls the game has a ton to offer and it's not really fair to place so much weight on that especially when the game is already designed to reward experimentation and mastery.
