In the previous gens, drift was exceptionally rare. Now drift is just an accepted thing that happens to controllers. Oh your $80 dollar joycons started drifting? Oh well, just grab a new one then use those until they start drifting

The underlying mechanical problem has always been there, but deadzones were made fuckhuge to compensate for it at the cost of analog precision. I have heavily used ps1 and ps2 controllers, which have normal potentiometer sticks, and of course they drift when I use them on my PC without increasing deadzone (because that is up to the user on PC as it should be). But they don't actually drift in any game on my ps1/2 consoles.
The overall result was games that benefited from analog control little if at all, didn't need any precision, and mostly could be played okay on an emulator with a keyboard. (try that with F-zero X, one of the few games that actually has precise analog control).
Don't get me wrong, the companies are absolutely cheaping out on parts and shrinking the deadzones intentionally to make it more of a problem.
