this has happened repeatedly over time

gen 3 was a huge disappointment at the time because unlike gen 2 they decided to remove old pokemon and old regions. it was a huge step back. but now that gen looks amazing, because even if it was lazy, it was miles more competently made than the pokemon games that came after it

setting the bar lower with every new entry makes people appreciate previous games that hadn't yet sunk to these new depths

Because gen 6 was unfinished, 7 was a worse yo kai watch, 8 was butt ugly with pokemon cuts and 9 crashes your switch. 5 was the last good gen.

Gen V is fine, just incredibly overrated. I think as a response to people saying they were really awful people hype them up too much.

Most of the new pokemon were all shitty derivatives or remakes of older pokemon.
Going story-focused in a pokemon game.
Uninspired, bland routes.
Region is one big circle with many of them being empty bridges. Doesn't feel like an adventure at all, feels like a shopping trip downtown.

I don't remember how 4chan was reacting during gen V but I do remember browsing here and playing it when it first leaked and we had to use translation patches.

Trolling. Those random, jarring in-battle music swaps are enough to psyche anyone out. The composers thought they were hot shit and it shows. One of the only redeeming qualities is that Gamefreak finally managed to get 30 fps, the same gen in which Mario 64 DS was a launch title. Gen V had a higher fakemon (the pokemon designs) feeling than Gen IV.

I remember liking B/W on release, was just annoyed at it only being new gen mons available. The mons were decent though and I found a lot of new favourites.

Actually replaying it now and I think it might be my favourite mainline game.

This was always a thing in the series whether you noticed it or not. See shit like Diglett's Cave next to Lt Surge, Ice Path before Clair, or Challenge Rock before Lenora. My guess is they made it a giftmon there due to the rotating gym leaders.
