Why is cheating in single player games no longer seen as cool and fun? Didn't we all use to exchange cheat sheets we found on a shady website during high school days?

Those were fun additions and new ways to play the game not for serious competitive cheating or anything like that. They were like added gameplay components you could mess with after you beat the game.

Because people typically kept their mouth shut about it in the Game Genie/Gameshark/Action Replay days whereas now everyone feels the need to give their opinion on everything and a cheater's opinion on a game is meaningless. Nobody gives a fuck if you need cheat mods or CE to beat Elden Ring. Play the game how you want but don't engage in discussions about it because your input holds zero value.

Cheat codes would go against the live service/constant online access status quo.

There's just generally fewer opportunities for cheating in single player these days unless you mod or use cheat engine.

personally, it makes games boring for me now. I don't think i played a single gta game without using cheats every other minute when i was a kid, now i can't be assed. I'd go out of my way now to not use cheese and op strats because it makes me lose interest

ive never enjoyed cheats i had to learn from external sources. i really enjoyed the era of making cheats unlockables. like halo 3's skulls or even just unlocks for beating the game like call of duty finest hour. risk of rain does something like that but most of the 'cheats' just make the game harder, which i don't dislike either. did games walk away from this? i haven't played anything recently that had something like this.

Because cheats are no longer needed. They were often debug tools for the developers since games back in the day weren't made in WYSIWYG editors where you can just throw in the thing you want to test right now.

Those who used them to cheat Pokemon openly did so. No idea what else they were even used for. But it wasn't really rare to ask someone "hey, can you cheat me a Deoxys?"

Games don't have cheat codes anymore because rather than a cheat code to get invincibility and infinite ammo they'd rather sell you the beginner starter pack for 5 bucks which does that instead. You could use a cheat code or beat the game 100% to unlock a new skin or character, but they'd rather sell it for a 15 dollar dlc pack instead.
