You might have accidentaly downloaded a romset for a wrong version of FBNeo.
I'm not using the standalone emulator, i'm using it in retroarch and that one is version 1.0.0.0.3, so check your romset version.

It's not shitty at all, in fact it's incredible considering the amount of different arcade machines that it emulates. Remember "Arcade" is not a single system. It's also simpler than standalone mednafen/beetle that doesn't even have a gui and everything is done through commandline. Thankfully there are retroarch cores for those too.

Multiple arcade systems to emulate, I guess that's what makes this especially complicated. It's often worth the hassle imo, playing Initial D Arcade Stage on teknoparrot is just great

Check if your romset has merged zip files for systems.
Sometimes it requires shit like metalslug.zip and neogeo.zip in the same folder but sometimes people merge different game versions (like usa, japan) in the same zip file. But maybe someone else who is more familiar with standalone FBNeo can help.

in retroarch you just do a manual scan and mark where the .dat file is located.

FBneo is great but with how finnicky the romset is it's not worth bothering with outside of fightcade. i tried to use it for nes emulation and trying to get it to use anything outside of roms specifically made for it is a NIGHTMARE
