Sure D4 is the best disgaea but saying that nothing after is worth mentioning is genwunner BS, we have games like 6 that are complete garbage but there are games like 5 that did a lot of things right.

Another sort of small/weird thing that I want is customizable base dialogue for generics. Like when you talk to them in the base, each voice personality has dialogue they give you. Let me either choose the voice and personality separately or be able to customize that in some way. 7 does let you customize the flavor text in their status which is a step in the right direction.

If they're straight up going to remove any kind of animation for Team Attacks, remove Team Attacks as a mechanic and replace it with something else that actually makes sense with its presentation.

I refunded Disgaea 7 after seeing how far backwards they've gone on presentation compared to earlier games (I didn't play 6 since I understood that it was apparently not that good).

So unfortunately unless they turn things around, Disgaea 5 might be the last game in the series with any actual effort.

Well actually I'd argue the Vita version of 4 is the definitive one. Complete+ added unnecessary global rankings and MTX shop, and at least on Switch there's some visible screen tearing during the intro cinematic, something that wasn't there in the previous versions.

My issue with the labyrinth games is the severe lack of flattie portraits and then telling me to make a party of 15 when there's only like three portraits that appeal to me, and one of them isn't even unlocked until later. Even if I make a party of 5, the covens don't auto-adjust their width on screen to match the number of units which also bothers me. And then the actual combat just isn't very good, it's way too focused on normal attacking. The classes are basically just stat-sticks with little unique traits beyond some passives. I want Nis to make a new IP dungeon crawler with Harada's art or just fix the above issues if they make another labyrinth game. Maybe get rid of the silly 15 person thing and make it like 5 or 6 party members.To be fair, I only played the first one but I did my research when Galleria came out and it doesn't seem like any of my issues were addressed. Also making the MC a slut heavily pushed me away. I don't mind dark themes but I still wasn't crazy about that Izumi guy. Hundred Knight does still have a great OST however and both it and Refrain still have a lot of charm and quirk put into their settings.

playing through makai kingdom rn as it's the last NIS game (on pc) i haven't touched yet and it is really slow. i mean the watching every single unit move at a snail's pace, the PLAYER TURN and ENEMY TURN popups that last several seconds for each turn change... i tried mimicking the later games speed settings by speedhacking it and even running the game at 5x native speed it still feels slower than any disgaea except 1 and 2.

You have to get to the true ending/final final dungeon for things to make sense, but it is pretty much a direct continuation. If you're a sperg and can't handle it because of the gameplay differences then you'll flinch at that fact, but it's far more connected than anything else they've done. Just because there are fewer frames doesn't mean the animations are bad. In fact, one of the best things about Disgaea animations was how they were using shared poses between classes to construct different kinds of animations, and they got increasingly creative with them as time went on.

One of my favorite skills is Cocktail Shaker from 3's gun skills, it uses all the same poses that all classes share but they make it so that it actually looks like a bartender cocktail shake with exaggerated poses and animation speeds. It's hilarious and awesome. Not to mention all the other skill and especially combo attack animations. That's using your pose sprites smartly and creatively.

Zed's character showed genuine convincing love and protective instinct for his little sister. Melodia, Piyori, and Majolene were fun characters. Yarmada is underrated as a mooch who just wants to live easy. I played it eons ago on PS1 emulator, but story translation existed since 00s so I just had to memorize what each menu option and ability did
I think it balanced the story way batter than first game - first half of first Marl Kingdom game was better, but once you start travelling the world to gather 5 stones (even if some plot development was pretty brutal, that's your classic NIS writing) it kinda drops in quality. Giving a bigger spotlight to witches by introducing second famly who fights against Marjory was a good decision, and this game's main male character isn't stuck in stone for half of the game (so you get a pretty nice trio of MCs, which is better than a duo of Cornet and Kururu with occasional Etoile)
But Marl Kingdom's writing peaks with Cherie's story in third game anyway

Part of her character development is becoming a fallen angel and earning redemption. To hate Fallen Flonne that much means you don't love ALL of her.
