Hello folks, in this thread we're discussing game development. Whether you're with a large group or you're by yourself, post progress, ask for help or lurk.
>>717090949 (OP)Oh yeah? Make me bitch
>>717090949 (OP)Turns out making the framework was the easy part
Now I gotta like... fill it with stuff
>>717091063yeh. while trying to not make it too difficult to play
im making a h-game battle-fuck. What would do better? female MC or male MC (bottom)?
>>717090949 (OP)Is anyone working with plot-, key-, story- or emotional beats?
I like prototyping the basic systems of a game but I get skittish when I have to commit to anything concrete like choosing a theme, characters, etc.
https://youtu.be/hyY4xu4ecQI
How do you guys handle play testing? I feel like the hardest part of making a game is trying to balance after playing 1000s of hours yourself.
For my last game, I used early access and got a handful of really helpful people that saw my vision. But it's tough to keep public interest if people don't like your project at 90% completion.
Is it better now to make a full game (minus some features) and release a steam demo? Seems like it would get swept away on the crowd during a Next fest or something.
i made my player ragdoll when falling or get run over by a car
>>717092827 Based. Nothing sells a game like hilarious unintended ragdoll physics. Just donโt fix the bugs, make them features. Thatโs indie dev alchemy right there. Got cars launching people into orbit yet or still tweaking the launch angle?
>>717093915nah they launch pretty normally now, it's just networked properly
>>717094767I'm never ever going to make my levels in Blender, shit looks painful. Trenchbroom and brushes for the win babe.

>>717094898Fuck yeah trenchbroom
>>717094898>>717094767Modelling is a pain and there's a thousand things that can go wrong (a billion if you're using blender) so I don't blame people who buy game models.

Back on this thing after months of no motivation. Working keyboard controls for everything! I'm not using my mouse at any point here.
>>717091264why do you want to make a getting raped simulator, make a normal rape one
>>717095318based accessibilty chad
I am still playing around with Godot. Now the shape morphing happens on a toggle, and switching mid animation reverses it.
>>717095493Thanks. It always bugs me how OS games almost never have good keyboard controls so I'm hoping to make a difference.
>>717095985That's pretty funny. I think it's not too exaggerated to cause motion sickness or whatever, it's just the right amount of ragdolling.
action game, you are using a curative but you get hit while the animation plays so the curative falls to the ground and breaks, losing it. Yes or no? I think it might be too frustrating.
For a complete newbie who has a lot of free time and no ambition to immediately shoot for releasing games, what's the best engine?
I'm currently fiddling around in UE5 and it's surprisingly good for a newfag but i wonder if godot and unity are better suited for a solo dev.
Quake has taught me that a single moving box collider can be a drawbridge, a moving platform, a door, a crusher or a trapdoor with basically no modifications to code. Literally all the same thing.
Every world now has a Nett Hier sticker in it. If you shoot them all, you get an achievement. We really, really fucking hate seeing those stupid things on every vacation we go.
>>717090949 (OP)Thanks for actually putting a title, it's impossible to find these threads in the archive because the guy never names them anything.
Continuing where I left off last night, going to implement a score counter and rewards for taking out the trash.
I am making my game in Jai.
>>717097506as a ue4 dev that was a noob when i started i'd say it doesn't matter which engine. unless there is a benefit for your specific game
>>717097506Depends on really you I guess. I didnt know Unity had blueprints like unreal but I started with unreal 5.3 them moved 5.4.4.
Most have good tutorials on them. If you want to watch videos about syntax check Unreal University. If will keep you from doing stupid shit like casting every time you do 1 thing instead of setting an initiate event that runs at the beginning.
https://youtu.be/KE_8OwmHY-A?si=fsD337IzhYiIO5cP
I sometimes feel bad if my game is taking inspiration or stuff from games I like, for example Beyond Citadel or similar shooters. It just feels odd to me.
>>717098193Fuck that is hilarious. I know it might not be intentional but it makes me think of the giants in Skyrim pre patched physics.
>>717097997yeah but Duke Nukem taught me that you gotta be careful woth those assumptions or else your doors might crush the player
>>717098818I mean it definitely explains instead death touching a door.
>>717098628You really shouldn't give a shit, I am openly inspired by games I like because I wanna make games I myself would play. Great artists steal, nothing new under the sun, yada yada. I think at the very least you should give your game its own sense of identity though, give it something that people can point to and say "THIS is what it does different from the other games like it".
Just look at Yooka-Laylee for example. It came out really rough at launch and even now it's kind of a piece of shit. People would've been kinder to it if it did something original or innovative, but it didn't so the flaws stick out much more than they'd otherwise do because everything it does, Banjo-Kazooie (and Tooie) do better. That's the trap you could run into if you're too naked about your inspiration.
>>717098818For the crusher, I am just going to duct tape a box collider to the end of it with a damage component on it. The others won't do any damage.
>>717091264Male MC (Power bottom)
>>717090949 (OP)What is this, a job presentation? Who's the fucking insufferable retard who started making these threads? Show me your game bitch.
I feel bad for mostly copying the shit i see in the tutorials but i see no other way to get into gamedev
>>717091264>battle fuckMale protag. I understand it's a lot of work doing a lot of female enemies, but it's required so the player doesn't get bored. If you have a female protag, having the same girl get fucked over and over with generic scenes gets boring.
>>717099313perfectly fine as long as you are trying to understand the code and not just copy&pasting with 0 care
>>717098387Man blueprints are such an awesome system for a non-programmer, but i wonder if having no C++ knowledge will fuck me in the long run.
This system almost looks easy after nearly 3 years with comfyui
>>717099037People would have been kinder to yookalele if the dev haven't joined in on the jontron bashing, agree or not with his words that was retarded, he directed his fanbase to the kickstarter and of course they were sharpening their knives to give scathing reviews over any flaw they may have forgiven otherwise.
Today is blender day. Started a new armor set of 3.
>>717099834They are! And dont worry, the more dedication and discovery you make and stick with it, eventually you will run into hybrid c++ and BP tutorials.
>>717090949 (OP)How do u make a 3D game in C without any emgine lol.
>>717100330Can you draw or how do you come up with designs?
>>717100530you cant use unity?
>>717098081Here's what it looks like if you destroy it, cause funny.

>>717101236Nice game, but have you ever visited Berlin?
What do you gamers think of my first game's steam page?
It's unfortunate I have to show the monster but that's what you need to get some interest flowing on steam apparently.
I think it's more potent as a surprise

>>717101519>Colognenice cathedral and some neat street art, but lots of junkies tho
Doing some code refactoring today in preparation for making child Combat classes with their own rules.
>>717100559Usually via ai prompts for the image, then days upon days tweaking prompts in meshy, photoshop, blender, and unreal. Unreal has better modeling tools for my specific needs at times. Normally the prompts starts with dark fantasy and I usually add "games asset or "prop" so it generates a part like. Here is an example of my progress when I started vs how my character looks now.
I installed Unreal and been messing around with it and wanted to make some low poly assets in Blender. However exporting it to Unreal has been an absolute nightmare. .fbx files for some reason smooth my model, making it look like complete shit, and don't carry my texture with it. I guess I can go manually reapply it from an image but still.
.glb has the texture, even seems to preserve the material (although it's an instance material linked to some gltf plugin) and doesn't smooth the model but for some reason it fucks up the scale completely.
What's your workflow when it comes to this? I just started learning Blender as well so I know almost nothing about modelling and UVs and all that. I just wanted to mess around a bit in-engine with the basic shitty stuff I can already make. I'm retarded so I'd appreciate some advice.
>>717100559>>717102408Here is the full picture reference
>>717102649Synthol, it seems. Goal of the game is to purge the Synthol and replace it with true lifting power.
>>717098193>Garbage man, Japan:O
>>717102408Did you use tutorials or were you born with the needed knowledge?
>>717098193Make the bags jiggle.
>>717102514>exporting it to Unreal has been an absolute nightmareunity can be a mess too. its just one of those things we live with.
>>717103065Experience of course lol. The prompts came with time, 99% of it is fucking garbage to work with. But honestly I've learned UE5 from going through tutorials. I'd advise against Gorka as he goes through many shortcuts to make a "game" and uses event ticks way more than necessary. Same for blender, ill watch tutorials when im stuck on something.
>>717101236looking cool but I don't think that music fits that scenario
>>717104428You mean the environment?
>>717104471yeah, what else could I mean lol
>>717104576Eh, it's near the end of the game in a top secret underwater base swarming with enemies and tough battles. I think it works fine when you go through it, this specific room is just a puzzle room.
>>717103971That's how I approached coding at uni. Do first and look up if stuck. Do you have an eta?
I'm range banned, cant post files. Just added another gear piece that summons a little follower:

>>717100330Impressive, my blender skills are nowhere near that.
>>717106581>>Motivation is fickle, cultivate disciplineYeah, I know. I forced myself to work on it bit by bit until I got my motivation back proper and now I'm enjoying the process again even if I'm a codelet.
>>717090949 (OP)I'm making the next Cry Engine
>>717105261Not yet, but definitely want to get a demo out by December.
>>717106930Next to impossible to run of current and future hardware?
>>717102514When you import does unreal create a new folder with your textures on your desktop or in the folder where your model is?
>>717107403Dw it will have multithreading and everything is done trough shaders, MSAA and a custom non-SS GI solution
>>717106581>maybe some blood splatshuh yeah, haven't thought about that. i don't have blood decals at all
Working on boss animations
I get no views on reddit, doing marketing sucks, I hate it. I used to think if you make a good game, sales will come, but now I don't even have confidence in this game anymore. I'll still work on it for a while with hope but my soul has sort of resigned and accepted defeat with life.
>>717108117It just puts the imported stuff in the project folder where I tell it. It seems to drag the entire scene with it. I also found the option that makes my flat objects smooth - it's when you choose to have it compute normals (the default) as opposed to importing them.
I found the official unreal plugin for importing from blender and it just werks, but unfortunately it's dead and it only works in blender 3.6. In any kind of recent version it's fucked
>>717108802I have the same problem with plug-ins. Any features in the later version you would like to have?
Is the salt and sanctuary / sacrifice series using 2D skeletal animation or is that another technique altogether?
>>717108670>I get no views on reddit, doing marketing sucks, I hate it. I used to think if you make a good game, sales will come, but now I don't even have confidence in this game anymore. I'll still work on it for a while with hope but my soul has sort of resigned and accepted defeat with life. That's kind of how it is anymore. There's not even any hope of getting paid to make a game for someone else because so many people are willing to dev for free.
>>717108670Don't let the faggotry of reddit pull you down anon.
>>717108670Try #screenshotsaturday on twitter.
Also make sure you have an actually appealing game. You'd be surprised how many devs fail this basic step.
>>717109532Wow good job dude! I have nothing to comment on it speaks for itself.
>>717109070I'm too new at this whole thing to give you an informed reply unfortunately. In an ideal world I'd just want to click on my blender model and import it into unreal complete with UVs etc. That's what the official plugin already does, it's just outdated.
There's actually a plugin for unreal itself that makes it support .blend, and it's maintained and probably just werks, but it's also not free :^)
Before I lose my mind any further about this, I'll just forget about this whole thing and learn both more unreal and 3D modelling separately before trying to figure it out, I don't even know yet how to texture things properly
i tried to make a voxel engine in unity and it was not only very hard but ran like dogshit in the end
is this why people who make actual voxel games generally use custom engines?
>>717109532put in canned fortnight dances
>>717109795Haha you're fine man. I started off using assets and made the game framework (still wip) just copied my assets over once I was ready for the modeling portion because I didn't want to model without knowing a gamepad would actually work right.

>>717111439lol, glad someone liked that. I want to make more silly stuff, maybe when I have more enemy types.
>>717111801No, litter makes you money. Your job will be to avoid running over people as you try to deliver the trash to the bin against a timer for.. reasons. Hitting people costs you money and hitting them too many times gets the police on your ass.
>>717112173I hate people who litter and want to seem them punished
>>717111832It adds to their character for sure lol.
>>717112240This is what I'm banking on, people will find it satisfying to clean up the trash and make it look nice.
I can't make it an obvious carmageddon, those kind of games are going to be banned next.
added an effect when combining items on the slot that holds the item that will result from the combination, hoping to add some more feedback to it. Next up I'll work on the tools, items you can craft to help you in combat, like items to stun enemies, throwing bombs, and that kind of stuff. The code to aim those should come in useful when I work on the bow later on.

>>717121378>>717121493thanks anons, glad you like it!
>>717122036the basics are setting up a navigation mesh for your enemies to traverse, and assigning a navigation agent node to each of them so they can interact with the mesh. I got started with this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-juhGgA076E
Thing is, the end result will be kinda shit. You'll notice how all the enemies pile together and form a beeline when following you. To make things more interesting, I recommend looking into boids and flock behaviors, so they can move like an unit, but respecting each other's distance. Good luck!
>>717122341>I recommend looking into boids and flock behaviors,I think the best way to make "lifelike" enemies interesting is to control them all at once rather than treat them as completely separate. Kind of like how in OOT, enemies would group up on you but stand back if you targeted a particular one. You'd probably need an enemy manager to handle that.
>>717122485yeah, that's another way to do that. Thing is I wanted to make a beat'em'up where enemies are quite active and don't wait for others, plus I wanted to make it unpredictable. If you go with that approach you mention, you'll end up with predictable behaviors like the one you describe from OOT. Don't think one is better than the other, depends on how's the game you want to make.
>>717121948no. more like cod and dead space (because I only playeed few games in my life, thats all I know as a references)
I hate the overwhelming sense of doom that comes with enjoying the process of game dev, but knowing that it's for the sake of creating an end product that is meant to entertain others, and how incredibly rare it is for people to actually give it the time of day, or how long into dev it takes for players and not fellow devs to show interest

When the range is met, it causes a "failure" response to combat and and failures reverts back to default root tree, for now it is an simple move to with a few random animations tied to it.
>>717095258For using them as a placeholder until the actual content is being made? Completely fine.

>>717137028Yeah, just a small test. I built in a multiplier slider for each blendshape, but have not applied them yet. I still got some tweaking to do.
>>717137359Ah I gotcha sorry. I forget nothing generally is ready to go out the gate. But mad impressive you bought that stuff to use it. I planned on using my phone lol
>>717137359Make him a she and put a dig in her.
>>717100530Learn how to program in OpenGL or some other graphics library. For OGL this site right here is a great place to learn:
https://learnopengl.com
Alternatively, if that's too hard, you can use Raylib. Also look up /gedg/ on /g/, they'll have more info on the details of "pure code" game development if you have questions.
>>717136595What is this base mesh? It has the blendshapes built in?
>>717100530write directly to /dev/fb0
>>717116920Needs crotch kicking animation
>>717136076>without the context there is no game to be made!Excuse plots were the norm for most of the history of video games. If you have a good, fun game, any context is sufficient, no matter how simple.
>>717135935Something on itch.io about dark fantasy, it doesn't start until September but the host says early work is okay because its for a spot in some bundle

>>717122113I think so too
>>717140439And almost none of those games are replayable nowadays because they didn't have that extra oomph to make you really give a shit about being in their world
>>717140439What if I'm making an RPG
>>717144135The plot can be random is progress means players aren't focued on it because they're engaged in other parts of the game.
>>717136130>>717136960Added the full armor set. Still need to tweak the arms and the helm piece is clipping through but it came out well.
>>717143049Just the main menu so far but I've got the 3d software rendering working and can load the tracks. Should be in game soon.
>>717145252>717145252That's awesome, how challenging was this not do?
Good productive thread boys, have a great night im done for the day.
>>717145152what's with that framerate
>>717147260I'm using my dev computer. It isnt graphically fast like my desktop machine but has a faster cpu. Here is an older video running on my desktop.
not attacking anyone specific in this thread, but when I see an early build that's laggy as shit, I just want to tell the guy to give up or start over. I don't because I don't want to hurt the feeling of anyone directly, but if this is your game, take my advice. you aren't gonna make it run smoothly by "optimizing it later", you already fucked up big time.
>>717148130not the anon above but i only have a weak laptop and have to record gameplay on top of shit performance, that's gotta do it sorry to trigger your autism
>>717148750just for clarification, what made me write my post is stuff I've seen on the twitter algorithm today, has nothing to do with anything posted in this thread.
>>717131976Well I'm not exactly a new user, I did Godot's 2D and 3D game tutorials like a year ago. My experience was okay, except for when I tried making the animation play in reverse, which was a headache. I asked an experienced Godot developer friend for a tip, and he recommended I instead use 2 animations which are opposites of each other, and that worked very well.
Phasmophobia-like MIB game where you find and neutralize illegal aliens among the human populace and minimize collateral damage and avoid being seen by civilians as you do it
>>717148750Same, my computer lags when running the game and record.
>>717150548Like real ones or ones from outer space.
>>717153483Ones from outer space but they may look like illegal aliens
Why was the last thread deleted? Jannies took it down before I got any (you)s for my progress poast
I had a idea'm for a game foday and I was thinking it's pikmin (warm itzler) but just 100000 seeds that generate levels and time trials and scoreboards. Such an easy concept, I'm gonna go for a quickie game.
are there any books you guys recommend?
>>717158475For what?
Game Programming Patterns is probably nice to read, no matter your engine or role, albeit not sure a beginner would be able to grasp most of it.
Which frankly applies to most programming books. If you haven't coded a decent amount and suffered due to your own incompetence, most things written in books about programming techniques or clean code will fly over your head.
>>717123208>or how long into dev it takes for players and not fellow devs to show interestThis is why you should listen to your inner child and craft the literal coolest game you can think of
>>717145152Wtf, you constantly make progress. Neato!
>>717143807Same goes for any punk aesthetic. It's just one or two characteristics with a certain aesthetic, like random clogs and wheels for steampunk. That wasn't always the case, considering jules vernes is pioneer of steampunk. It was about a certain spirit and the vision that technology elevates society and therefore civilisation itself.
Working on a game gave me a newfound appreciation for games. Every smallest detail is painstaking work, well unless it is an asset flip. Anyway I got a new obsession of photographing old walls and pavements so I can use them as baseline for creating tiles for my dungeon crawler. Hoping to have something to showcase for Anons soon, been mostly working on under the hood stuff, turn based battle especially was more challenging than I thought since I wanted a flexible system with chain reactions
