Microsoft's market strategy is "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish".
If their initial forays do not at least look enticing, then no one will bite the hook.
Everything they put out afterward sucks and only existed to push bad proprietary APIs like Xinput.

No, kek- I can't describe it but all factory-fresh Xbox consoles smelled almost like a very light cologne mixed with rubber. Xbox consoles and accessories smelled like the future. I can't be the only one here who remembers the smell, right? You couldn't go into a GameStop without being blasted with it

It was soulful at first with a lot of creative and unique combined with Sega's great games. But then Halo 2 came out and Microsoft flipped the switch and turned it into a Halo machine. If that didn't happen I think a lot of revionist would be calling the Xbox the best console of the generation.

Xbox was great, and 360 pretty good too. Itโ€™s too bad Microdicks really turned into the biggest pieces of shit in gaming by gobbling up IPโ€™s and doing absolutely nothing with them. Just sitting on them so nobody else can use them or compete with them and they donโ€™t have to try. Killing gaming.

The smell of something good, the smell of fun on the horizon. Getting an Xbox as your first disc based and 3D based console because your parents never could afford a Saturn, N64, or PS1, but your dad got a good job and decided to give you and your siblings something to play besides the Xbox.
It was.

I really don't see the hate for the Xbox 360. It wasn't a PS2 or anything but during that gen it was the best way to play multiplats.

>the hardware has a shorter life than a stillborn child

Mine is still kicking strong and works like a charm. Meanwhile you have to replace your thermal paste for the PS3 and remove the clock capacitor from the OG Xbox since the OG Xbox used cheap ones.

I work at a video game shop in my town. Outside of NESes and PS4s, the PS2 is the one that fills our defective bin the most for so many damn reasons. Yeah we get Red Ringed xbox 360s in, but they're always the ancient launch day ones, just like mine. The rest? Never seen a slim or E model come through thats dead or inoperable.
There was a time my store used to fix things, but the owner, believing it was too much work to save something that probably can't be saved, decided to just cut the price to about a 1/5th-or-1/6th of what we price em at and sell them for anyone who wants to try and fix em.

The wii was a great system. I can get the hate at its time, because many people are going to pick one console for a generation. But there was so much overlap between ps3 and 360, both appealing to the same demographic and sharing many multiplats. The wii being underpowered and having a gimmick gave it its own whole set of games, and we got a much more diverse library in the seventh gen than we would have had it been a similar console to the competition.

Also anyone who complains about having to flick their wrist or point at the screen is a lardass.

fixing a ps2 pretty much comes down to adjusting either the dvd or cd laser diode's potentiometer with a screw driver by a quarter turn
of course, if you turn it the wrong way, you'd likely kill the laser
but the fix takes a couple minutes if you know what you're doing and would make you an easy $40 (at the time)

i've only encountered one (1) house that was stained with weed smoke, and it was my high school drug dealer, and her house was a drug den
still, good for you for taking that outside (but it's nice to know toking inside won't ruin your place and property)

It's still crazy how the 360 era is what started most of what's wrong with the game market, then the ONE went full swing into scum. Microsoft essentially appeared out of nowhere in gaming, earned out trust for some years, began ruining the platform, bought out the competition (game companies), only to axe them completely, and now they're on the verge of leaving due to how bad their current console is doing.

i've read that 1/20 of all shipped launch PS2 systems (Q1+2 2000) had to be sent back to Sony for repairs, maybe that's where the extra few million units sony discovered came from lol.

It was perhaps the last time Microsoft tried to make something genuinely cool. Everything afterwards has been a string of "minimum viable product" scams where they just check what they can get away with.

A local store was selling these demo discs for a dollar each so I grabbed all of them. I don't need these because I already own/pirated all of the games featured here, but it's been pretty cool looking through their contents and seeing what subscribers would have gotten in their mailboxes every month. The videos are in pretty good quality too, if I had a capture card I'd upload them to youtube.
Yes I have the xbox keyboard and mouse because I was due for a replacement. No they don't work on the real OG Xbox, at least my brook adapter doesn't support them. It does feel good to use compared to the redragon crap I've had since 2015.

A few years ago someone rigged up a hacky way to make the games work with a 360 controller with the chatpad. Unfortunately it requires a modchip install (a different type of modchip from the ones used to hack consoles) and a 360 controller with the chatpad, which by now are either in complete garbage condition or rotting in a landfill.
