Do you skip dialogue when playing games?

Don't conflate dialogue with just the audio. I can read quickly, but sometimes I slow down just so I can give it a voice in my head.

No that's dumb. Why would you spend time and money on a game like an RPG if you don't like reading?

Because I prefer games with AI dialogue. Like City of Spells.

Aha, the joke is that you see him skipping the english Dragon quest localization and think
>What the fuck, there's no way he's reading any of that.

Which is just a part of the bamboozlement, see, he's playing it in Japanese in which the text is actually way shorter than in the localized version. For the footage they use the translated versions, giving a misleading image.

believe it or not anon, some of us speak english as a first language so it's not difficult to read the dragon quest localization.

I agree with him. Aside from the Dragon Quest text, I could read everything easily.
If I'm dealing with a character I don't care about or trying to get some gaming in before bed not being forced to watch some mocap actor emote is a win imo.

Yes and cut scenes. If I wanted to hear a story and watch a movie I'd watch a fucking movie.

This is why voice acting is stupid and pointless, by the time I've finished reading the VA line is still at the first half of the sentence

it also limits the way dialogue can be written while still sounding natural when spoken out-loud

Any and every time
I don't care about plot/ narrative/ MoTiVaTiOn
I judge a game based on gameplay.

Which is funny in games like Persona 5 because if you back out of menus when the Velvet Room girls are talking, theyโ€™ll give you alternate voice lines where they bitch at you for being impatient. More games should do this, where the NPC will explicitly get sick of your shit if you keep interrupting them.

speaking english as a first language is why DQ localization is hard to read, they add all sorts of fake english bullshit to the text.

On the first playthrough, not really. If I'm, replaying a game, for the most part probably.

nope, i am the ultimate patientfag; i will sit through any cutscene and read all dialogue (though i *will* set dialogue speed to fastest if possible)
i'm the kinda gamer who enjoyed the drawn-out dialogue segments in golden sun, for example, the type of shit i know drives everyone else insane

in guild wars i would be the only one who didn't skip cutscenes and the group would get all pissy but it didn't bother me

this. game VA should be limited to a few in combat sound bytes, and then some minor grunt sounds for different emotions that can be played at the start of each dialogue line to set the tone. basically the way Fire Emblem Awakening did it was perfect.

webm unrelated? Sakurai wasn't skipping dialogue, he's just reads at above a 6th grade level, so he doesn't have to sit and sound out the words.

relax they were only like 5 minutes long at the most
and it was neat, you got to see your own characters in them
what's the point of treating games like chores you need to get done as soon as possible?

If it's voiced I will let them finish the line before continuing and treat the dialog box as like closed captions. The better games would have the text advance just as fast as it is being voiced, with pauses in the rendering where there are pauses in the speech.
Not letting them finish the line feels immersion breaking, unless it's something repeated or in a menu or something.
If it's not voiced but it still has the text rendered at a natural pace (like eg. in Yakuza) I will usually let it go at its pace and read it without forcing it to advance.
