How the hell can you look at the hallway dungeons, crappy Cloister of Trials puzzles, and god-awful side quests in FFX and go "Yeah, this is peak gaming"?

Then again, most people casually played through this shit and more than half didn't even beat the game.

Absolutely. Studios actually had soul back then-fewer live service scams, no mandatory 300-hour Ubisoft checklists, and devs made games because they loved games, not just quarterly reports. The creativity in that gen was unmatched. Every game felt like it was trying to do something *new*. Now they just try to survive launch patches and cash shop backlash.
