Despite the strength of the PS1's library, I think I'd still rather have an N64. I feel like the PS1 is a weird abomination that just happened to have good games out of some accident of chance. I probably think this due to none of the controllers being good, and all the 3D games having texture warping that makes it look like they were forced to exist on that hardware. Whereas the N64 controller is good and the system displays 3D games almost effortlessly.

I got the occasional urge for 64 games but every time I try one I'm immediately disappointed. They just feel bad to play. I think it's the framerates, it's not that they run at 30, it's that they always fluctuate around 20-30 and it feels really unpleasant to play.

Sony made / helped make:

>gran turismo

And a bunch of other games. Sonys first party lineup helped make the console what it was. And the decision to make a 3d oriented cd based console made it a good choice for a lot of developers probably the majority of them

I think anybody can definitively say the Playstation 1 has "more good games" but I am glad that I had an N64 when I did. I don't think I really would have been able to appreciate things like Gran Turismo or Silent Hill at that age anyway.

In the N64 world everyone basically played the same games more or less and inviting friends over for multiplayer was big, lord knows I wouldn't have had friends any other way.

The sad thing is in Japan they got a bunch of neutered releases compared to what was sold globally.
For instance, Pokemon over there was a constrained event battle with only a chunk of the pokedex. Event Battle in Pokemon Stadium / Stadium 2 was a leftover menu option from their version of the game where it was THE game. Theirs had no rental pokemon, the party games, gym leader castle, or the cups.

Snowboard Kids for global reworked map 3 and onward. It did drop the hub and storymode but for gameplay it got improved.

Starfox received an appreciable dub. The original is very serious to-the-point deliveries and does not make much use of the characters beyond the text.

There are sure to be more examples of releasing in Japan, improving, then releasing everywhere else on the 64.
Had they experienced what they missed out on maybe they would not have so eagerly jumped aboard the graphics train. Chasing big project quality is costing them the basics of fun games.
