Why isn't there a Panel De Pon general when it is objectively the best puzzle game?

Even if I agreed with that statement, there isn't one because it's not a very popular game...it doesn't even have an official translation unlike other Nintendo games (Tetris Attack doesn't count in this instance).

I summon panepon pros and ask the following:
>Are there differences in physics between the SNES/N64/GC versions? I couldn't find any technical breakdown online like you would for Tetris games for instance
>The frame perfect active chains you see in the tutorial and puzzles, do you really have to do them consistently to get gud? I just can't get them right, maybe once every 10 tries...

nigga, i've just picked it back up again after quitting it for a few years because i was dumping waaay too much time into being a fucking god at that game.
i've got a sub 4:00 99999 endless game on recorded on Panel Attack
bitches wish they were me

>>717130815
it's the only port of the game that accurately runs the SNES mechanics (less the extremely rare bugs)

>>717133301
dunno about the GC version, but the SNES and N64 versions have very slightly different mechanics, although i can't pinpoint exactly what that difference is; N64 feels more 'squishy'. the GBC game also is slightly different, but its different field size and garbage mechanics completely overshadow any mechanical differences

frame perfect moves should never be relied on, however with good enough timing, you can have a reasonably good chance of pulling them off.
ideally, you want to set up your chains so that you don't have to make a dynamic move to continue the chain, which frees you to set up the next chain. of course, one ends up doing dynamic chains all the time, but it's still important to try to minimize them

I think I get what you mean, it may be a product of the 30 vs 60 fps difference.
But then frame-perfect tricks should theoretically be twice as hard on Pokemon Puzzle League than the SNES versions, while I find them equally as hard, not more not less... Wish there were more in-depth resources this.

>>717135017
That makes sense, I guess I'll practice without those for now. Active chains are fine, it's just the ones in the tutorial like pic related that fuck me up.

You can sort of count the original being ported to Switch in 2020.
Also a few years ago there's Panel Attack, an open source clone for windows.

puyo puyo is garbage.
panel de pon is at least good enough that when it first got brought to the west it was marketed as a tetris variant.

at least panel de pon fans only had to be shafted to the tetris name once and it was only because of marketing. sega's been riding the tetris train since 2017 and their only true full puyo game after is apple exclusive.

is exactly the kind of dynamic move that you should use only as last resort
but if it's the only move you can spot in time, then absolutely go for it
this particular technique isn't frame-perfect, but the timing is pretty tight

an example of a frame-perfect move that is relatively easy to pull off is a sneak

The late slip isn't frame perfect?! Looks like I need more training
I also noticed that timings are even tighter in hard mode as clear time is shorter - are there standard tournament rules I should practice on? Such as normal/hard, initial speed, 5 panels vs 6...

i don't think it is. it takes a few frames for panels to swap, and swapping panels support falling blocks.
snatching a falling block and swapping it into a match does take perfect timing, though

personally, i think the game works best on easy at any speed. i mostly play endless these days because the cpu doesn't offer much challenge anymore.

that being said, jump on panel attack where everyone is playing hard with high speed, and it gets pretty insane. i find it a little too touchy, but can hold my own as long as i'm not aggressively advancing the stack to the top, which works on easy but is asking to die with the settings people usually play. there's a discord too for finding matchups and they run tourneys too, but i haven't jumped on in ages (i don't have a controller for my computer atm)
