Since the games are dead I've been reading through the Halo novels and they're actually pretty good.

I enjoyed Fall of Reach but only in the same way I enjoyed Star Wars EU where it scratches the itch of wanting more content from the IP, but it feels like something disconnected from the main material no matter how good or faithful it is

Halo Battle Born was actually kind of interesting. You think it'd be kind of lame, because it was explicitly marketed as a "Young Adult" series, unlike the other Halo books. Halo Battle Born follows a bunch of school kids who were on that mining planet from Halo 5, I think. The Covenant attack them and a group of four kids are left off on their own, trying to survive. It felt a bit like Red Dawn. The kids run into a Spartan III who helps them out. But the book tells the story from the kids' perspectives, and they've never seen the Covenant before. I thought it did a good job at making the Covenant appear intimidating.

Battle Born was supposed to get a trilogy but the last book was cancelled. There was a plot point about some Forerunner artifact that will probably never wrap up.

It wasn't the best series ever, but I would've liked a final entry. I liked the smaller scale of the action and how they almost get killed by a single Jackel and later a wounded Elite. It was certainly better than the Kilo Five and Forerunner trilogies.

Eric Nylund is Halo.
Everything else is fanfic.

But Halo 5 and Infinite inarguably have the best forges in the series, and I think they're both in the top 3 best core multiplayers in the series too

Most people actually dislike or are at least iffy about glasslands

The Bungie Era books are all worth reading (except for maybe The Flood). 343 stuff is take it or leave it.

She's hit or miss for me. I liked her Republic Commando novels and Glasslands was okay. Her Legacy of the Force and Gears of War novels sucked though.

They are generally goodd but that one sucks ass. I kept waiting for it to get better or improve and it actually just gets worse and more bland as it goes along.

Yes it is, theres like 4 minutes total of cool action like that and otherwise its all dogshit and they suppose as long as theres 30 seconds of action from the games you will put up with it all

Many years ago I was shocked to find out there were actually Wing Commander novels, some of which were even from the Kilrathi perspective. The ones I read legitimately were fucking great, probably better stories than the fucking games from 3 onward were too.

I kinda agree? It was watchable I guess. It was finally starting to approach decent at the end of the 2nd season but then it got cancelled. The best part about it was it gave me an excuse to talk about Halo on here.

Many years ago I was a huge fan of the first Republic Commando novel First Contact. Legit probably one of the best EU novels ever written and really made you feel like you were reading about soldiers deep in the shit in Star Wars. I was shocked to find out years later what a fucking nutjob Traviss is and how everyone despises her.

Has anyone on here read any of Kelly Gay's novels? She seems to be the new Eric Nylund from what I've been hearing.
Anonymous No.717137597 [Report]
You only like these books because you decided to use one of them for a mandatory book report in school
Anonymous No.717137608 [Report] >>717138632
The only way I'll read any 343 novel is if it's almost entirely disconnected to 343's games. Any of these books like that? What about the ones Staten came back to write?

>I was shocked to find out years later what a fucking nutjob Traviss is and how everyone despises her.

Because Karen Traviss is not a good writer in a pre-established franchise. She does zero research, something she actually brags about, and will throw out/ignore anything she disagrees with.

This happens in her Star Wars books the most. She's jacks off the Mandalorians to a fault. She bashes the Jedi, even makes stuff up to bash them, and famously told fans that if you liked the Jedi you'd be a Nazi.

In Halo, Halsey is a great character that yeah has some morally questionable actions, BUT the amount of hate that Traviss puts on her is insane.

the korean chick's side plot was fucking pointless. and what the fuck was up with her hairstyle?
i did like the spartan team though. and keyes being black didn't bother me too much (mullato miranda was pretty cute).
schizo chief was kind of meh
the most egregious thing was the fact that the prophets allowed a human into the covenant, which is absolutely lorebreaking; words cannot express how retarded that decision was.
I know a woman was behind that writing choice.

Can't help but feel Bungie was somewhat justified in wanting to resist Microsoft's pushing for a Halo Expanded Universe in the beginning.

I haven't read many of the newer novels but there are some that are pretty much completely divorced from the newer games like the Covenant focused ones. Broken Circle I think?

The first books are only really good if you were growing up with them
Ghosts of onyx and Cole protocol were pretty good.
Legends was great
Contact harvest was interesting but the characterization of Johnson was off.
The forerunner trilogy is boring as shit and obviously ruined the lore
The glassland trilogy could be good but it spends way to much time on morality and family bullshit.

Haven't gotten past those yet.

The campaign is a mess but is playable. The multiplayer is actually really fun and better than Infinite IMO.
