It's a poorly written scene even with this context, it's not conveyed in a way that makes sense. Or gets its point across without replaying the entire game and MAYBE guessing that Alex wrote that part in. The devs could've had her mess up a ton more details about her life in there, so much that the player would actually notice, but they didn't have her do that.
I like YIIK but sometimes it's like that Terry A Davis quote about complexity.
