Physical game lovers, how do you feel about this?
What will you do when you want to play a game but the only way to play it is this or digital?

Shut up. Western game never does keycard!!

Nintendo switch 2 was actual Japanese game killer. Not Chinese, Korean or Western games.
Nintendo switch 2 has nailed the coffin on Japanese game by fucking price and keycards when they are in peril in 2025 due to having kusoges only like MH wilds, Yumia, Mario Kart world, while in 2024, Japanese game was so strong according to metascore. But no Jap game with metascore over 90s this year..
Even worse, This nintendo direct has finished off switch 2 and Japanese game completely.

Nintendo is no match for Thunderous might of Chinese AAAs like Wukong, Phantom blade 0, lost soul aside, Tide of annhilation, where winds meet.

by the time it happens (15-20 years at least) I literally won't care, maybe there will an entirely new medium by this time or will gaming will stop being a thing for me, I literally don't see the issue with this except that it was predictable that companies would do the absolute minimim when it comes to physical and always choose the low-effort cheap option

yes selling a pro without a disc drive, which by design is aimed at hardcore fans who are more likely than not also owners of a big physical collection, was indeed a PR mistake because they would've paid premium for a pro even if it was more expensive due to the drive
sony execs are retarded, news at 11 I guess, as if the execs of nintendo or microsoft were the most brilliant smart people on earth
>>717160927
due to royalties each blu-ray player must be activated for playaback, if you are selling one instead of doing the pairing at the fabric it's pretty much impossible to do it otherwise
the reason for ps5 having two version however is simply because people don't really care and digital sales phase out physical sales
for first party titles the ratio is around 50/10, also it's kinda the same for the split of digital/disc drive consoles too

Key cards are shit but I'm just going to point out that you can still download your 3ds and Wii games, so I don't think losing access to downloads of game key cards will be a thing that will happen as in ever since the E-shop for Switch 2 is a direct continuation of the Switch 1 E-shop, I expect the Switch 3 E-shop to be the same
You're dead right, a lot of Switch 2 games don't need the extra access speed of the Switch 2 game cards, but I get why Nintendo won't offer Switch 1 carts as an option for Switch 2 for third parties, because third parties will kneecap themselves like they are doing with the keycards, you can bet if they were available third parties would just modify an existing game to add load times rather than rely on the increased speed of the new format, they are that petty with loose change.

So are people hung up on not owning a physical piece of cartridge (depsite the game code being downloaded on your system regardless if its on a cart or not) just a way for people to cope with stress of not having any talent or reason to live?

I always assumed people play games to experience the contents of the game, talk about that and draw inspriation from it. But after the game key card thing was brought up, I realize a lot of people only find value in owning something like they are collecting stamps. If thats the case, you still collect the same plastic regardless so I dont really understand what the problem is.
Not trying to be negative or anything, but I think buying games just to own them kind of defeats the purpose of games. If you want to buy somethign just to own it, invest in something larger that actually would have value in it and enjoy games for their design, art and ideas. Its not like buying the game makes you own all that creativity or artwork as your own.

Honestly, I stopped caring. I bought the PS5 with the disc drive, but all my PS5 games are digital anyway. The Switch was the last console I bought physical games for and with the Switch 2 being mostly codes in a box I just gave up. Most places don't even sell physical games anymore. It's over. We will own nothing, like it or not. If they take games off the online stores or shut down the service we can just use custom firmware and download ROMs, anyway. Fans always keep stuff alive.

Japan used to make great games like Persona 5, Nier Automata, Dark souls 3, Sekiro, BoTW, Xenoblade 2, MHW, RE7, FE3H, RE4R, Ryza 1-3, SF6, Mario wonder, pikmin 4, Elden ring, Unicorn overlord, Like a dragon 7, Asstro bot, metaphor since 2017, but how can they fall so soon this year and get mogged by Chinese black ships like genshin, starrail, ZZZ, WuWa, Wukong, Lost soul aside, Phantom blade zero, where wind meets
Korean black ship called Lies of P, and French black ship like expedition 33 and Asscreed shadow? Why did Japanese game which was glorious in 2024 tremble so easily?
No Japanese game this year got metascore over 90. Wilds, Yumia ,Mario kart world shows Japanese game's absolute fall this year. Even worse, nintendo direct being shit has finished off Japanese game.
While Western game was suffering this last year. But it became opposite this year as western games revived with Kingdom come 2, Doom dark age, expedition 33, Oblivion remaster, man.
And switch 2 was nail on coffin due to fuckin' greed and keycard, wahoo! And nintendo direct being shit was coup de grace.
What is left in Japan now?
Anime? Solo leveling was AOTS last year, and China makes them better, to be hero X, nezha and lord of mystery. Kpop demon hunter is hyping in Japan.
Comics? Korean makes them better.
Entertainment? Korea makes them better.
Car? Electricity? Korea and China makes them better.
Subculture? BA has 2000 comicket booth.
Japan is NOTHING!!

Maybe because he is too young but this is also why he has no problem customers losing control over their purchases and getting less and less for higher prices. This is why we went from special editions coming with a bunch of real life extras to a few bonus digital items.

I don't know why you're talking about access speeds of the Switch 1 cart when I specifically said "installation medium." Just put the games on Switch 1 carts but they're installed onto the device, then the cart is only used to activate it. It's exactly how disc based games have functioned for ages.

It just feels like shit buying a "physical game" but I need to connect online to actually play it.

If you can't sell them down the line, what's the point?

Plus, that said it's actually a regret I have with getting the Switch 2, because I have a backlog of digital games from Switch 1 that I forgot I even had. I sold Oddysey, Mario maker 2 and a few others, mostly because I don't like the clutter of storing them. Had I got digital, I'd still have those games for this, and probably he Switch 3/whatever is next gen.

At this stage, no one will buy physical games on Ebay because of Nintendo's aggressiveness, so what's the point? You might as well go digital so you essentially have the games on future consoles. Down the line you can sell the account if you really wanted to. The oldest PSN accounts with a lot of games go for an awful lot.

At that point there is no point, neither run off the physical cartridge, both require an install, why as a third party issue an install cart when a key card would be even cheaper, and even then a download vs an install, completely irrelevant, either you pick the game up in person in which case you can download the game from the stores wifi, or you order online. You need to understand that as a third party they see no difference functionally and that extra option would be completely moot, as a physical only guy I'm not buying an install cart.

It's true. If the Switch weren't a hybrid, then they could have used discs instead of game cards. Game cards are more expensive than discs. The reason key cards exist is to appease third party publishers who don't want to fork over the dough for game cards. This never would have been necessary if the Switch used standard discs like the other consoles, and thus would have negated the need for key cards.

If it's not a cartridge, it's not a "physical game". A blu-ray disc is 17 cents worth of polycarbonate with the game data entered into its underside. It's an outdated media format (first BRs were 2006) that just happens to be absurdly cheap and popular.

If you have the data on your machine you can copy it to any format you want, as often as you want. Memory sticks, memory cards, SDHC, minis, a bird, fucking you name it. Data storage is data storage.

You're saying that while confusing yourself about the issue. Nintendo isn't the problem here, the smallest carts available are 64gb and that's it, they can't just magically create smaller carts. They have to wait for the manufacturer to make them just like everyone else does.

Meanwhile these third party developers openly rejected that fact and refused to support their system at all unless a cheaper alternative was given, despite the fact that switch 1 carts are still a thing and compatible with the switch 2.
And that's where game keys come in, an extremely cheap alternative that exists solely to sate the greed of third party developers.

I gave up when I bought Stranger of Paradise and Elden Ring for series x and they weren't on the disc. When I ended up finding a PS5, I just went full digital and never looked back. Next gen games will grow past 100GB and Sony will be in the same situation Microsoft was this gen when the average game grew past 50GB. It at least makes more sense for Nintendo because the cost of the physical media is so much higher. All Xbox had to do was slap an extra data disc in a box and they were too cheap for even that.

Switch 1 is just fine, I have a PS5, and I have a PC, and there's nothing on Switch 2 I 'need'.

Maybe in a year or two now, when Nintendo third party support dwindles to nothing, they'll change their tune in how they're doing this. But until then, I don't care. If I want to buy a game physically, I should own it and not require the internet to ever enjoy it again.

Realistically I just won't play it. I think in my 30+ years of playing games, there have been maybe 10 games I've bought digitally for consoles. And most of those were just cheap ones on a sale. I'm not inherently against digital games, but the whole point of them is supposed to be they're cheaper since they don't have to be made or shipped (yet they cost just as much as a physical game,) and they can be convenient. Key cards are just the worst of both worlds: they don't have the permanence of a physical copy, but they don't have the convenience of a digital copy.

If my choice is physical or digital, I'm going to get a physical most of the time, and very rarely I'll get digital. If my choice is digital only because a company is purposefully trying to kill of physical? Then I'm just going to skip it entirely. There's no game so good that I'm willing to reward this behavior with money.

I don't support it, so I don't buy it. Short term I'm going to be playing old stuff. Long term, as in 2026, if publishers still make Game KeyCards I'll probably go 1st party only Nintendo Switch 2. When the PS5 starts doing this, I'll just accept my death as a dinosaur and go retro. I rather go out than accept digital cuckoldery.

The current copium is 64GB cards are expensive for publishers this year, with next year being better manufacturing costs. If Nintendo does this with their 1st party games, then all is lost on my Switch 2 purpose. Personally I see no room for nuance, I rather not download 50GB games on my Switch 2 and hold storage space hostage. Physical negates the need to do those massive downloads that eat into the Switch's 256GB memory.

People buying the 128GB-256GB MicroSD Express cards are in for a cruel world when their games are 100GB downloads down the road on the Switch 2. You might as well go for 500GB minimum for MicroSD Express on Switch 2, y'all are wasting your money that's all I'm saying on that subject.

Digital distribution includes: DLC, Microtransactions (Gacha casinos, casual mobile games), and online-only games like the AI/UnrealStore asset flipped games like Showering With Dad Simulator on Steam. All that revenue gets tossed together with digital AA/AAA games. All that stacking on the side of digital only and the reality is physical/digital split is 50:50.

On Playstation we know since the Sony 1st party studio randomware leak of ImsoniacGames that they're selling 60% physical through 3rd parties and 1st party Sony games are 80% physical purchases. Japan has a big physical presence for Nintendo products and as such the Switch 1 is big physical backing. Final Fantasy 10 HD Switch in EU and NA has 10-2 as a digital code, while in Asia the cartridge comes with both 10 HD and 10-2 HD. Japanese market is big for physical games.

On Steam, you purchase a license to play a game, not ownership of the game itself. This means Valve retains the right to revoke your access to the game, and you cannot resell it. This is standard practice for digital distribution platforms, and Steam now explicitly states this on the checkout page. A new California law requires digital storefronts to clarify that purchases grant a license, not ownership, to address concerns about digital ownership

Gamekey cards can be sold/traded. The next person who inserts it into their Switch 2 can download the game without any extra steps. The problem is they don't contain the game's data, so without internet that cartridge is worthless. Or if Nintendo themselves end of service their eShop like the Wii U/3DS. Game Keycards exist because the cost of the new cartridges are expensive (MicroSD Express, a 1TB card can cost 400 dollars).

The hardware manufacturers behind the MicroSD Express cards only offer 64GB as the lowest they can go, we aren't making 20GB hard drives anymore because there's no point. I hope keycards are a stopgap measure for the Switch 2's first few months, because this needs to be phased out by January 2026.

Youโ€™re painting this in a purposely wrong light. Because of this, theyโ€™re choosing not to and use the code shit Nintendo has instead. It doesnโ€™t help Nintendo has procured their own 64gb carts at the manufactures level

>"One of the things we saw is that gamers are used to, a little bit like DVD, having and owning their games. That's the consumer shift that needs to happen. They got comfortable not owning their CD collection or DVD collection. That's a transformation that's been a bit slower to happen [in games]. As gamers grow comfortable in that aspectโ€ฆ you don't lose your progress. If you resume your game at another time, your progress file is still there. That's not been deleted. You don't lose what you've built in the game or your engagement with the game. So it's about feeling comfortable with not owning your game.

I still buy physical games but I am aware it's inherently irrational.

I just need the $80 Limited Run release instead if the $8 download because I just do ok?

I can't think of any benefit to it unless maybe your Playstation account got banned and you'd still have the game, but honestly I'd be so pissed at that point I'd never buy a game again period.

At the end of the day it's functionally the same thing.
>but the person who buys it second hand has to do a download
And? Servers are up for downloads (the ability to buy isn't important since with a game key card you already bought it) and will be for at least the next 20 years based on the wii's eshop. This is also assuming that the next console which we are at minimum 5-7 years out from doesn't allow backwards compatibility with the switch 2, because if it did there would be no reason to shut down the shop preemptively.

All of the excuses for Game-Key Card's are shit you can already do with physical and digital
>Game-Key Card's are better than codes in boxes because I actually own it!
*Accepts wasting physical space for an actual cartridge in your console and digital storage for fully digital games*
>If you don't want to own it anymore then you can just sell it, like a real physical copy!
Not a single Game-Key Card has this problem on other systems, they're all fully physical
>Its easier for smaller titles like indies to get released this way, rather than actual cartridges
Not a single indie title has gotten a Game-Key Card yet, only AAA and AA
>You can just buy the Switch 1 version and get the Switch 2 update
I buy physical so I don't waste digital space, I have over 100 physical Switch games and various digital ones, enough to nearly fill a 512GB Micro SD. Nobody on Earth will have a huge Switch 2 collection since you're better off just buying digital rather than ""physical"".

You can actually still re-download all your purchased software for the Wii, DSi, 3DS and WiiU.

I would assume they'd still let you download the data for the Key Cards 20 years from now. By that time, there would be Switch 2 emulators and pretty much every notable game will be repackaged in a collection, on some kind of service or remastered, so it's not that big of a deal as you think.

Honestly? I'm not particularly arsed. Any time you buy a game these days you're lumbered with a massive day 1 update anyway. This is better than digital download because I can sell it on when I'm done with it. I don't like the sanctimonious "game preservation" stuff claiming that it's dead with this. It died with DLC and broken games launched on discs, expecting you to download massive patches throughout the 3-6 month period after a games release anyway.

Kinda yeah.
Collectorfag or someone who wants to replay the game down the line? Bad, but could be worse (like code-in-a-box).
Digitalfag? Bad, loses the convenience of buying digital.
Fag who just wants to play the game once/fag who has friends who do the same? Great, but obviously not as good as the full game on the cart.
Keep in mind that the alternative for third-parties doing this is simply having no physical cart in the first place, GKC or not, and having all their games be digital-only.

I don't understand why people still care about physical in this day and age.
>I need to save space on the hardware
Just get an SD Card. If you get to the point where you're out of space you can delete a few games you're no longer playing to make room.
>It's more convenient
How?
>I want to own my games
You're not going to "own" the majority of your physical games when it requires a day one download to even function.
>I want to resell my games in the future
This one is the only one that makes a bit of sense, but the majority of people selling their games only sell them just to get rid of them. People selling 25 games to GameStop for like $30 for the whole collection. I'd rather just delete the games and download them again if I get nostalgic for them in the future.

No, the alternative is full retail releases and you're a retard who doesn't understand the value shelf space has for sales. Having a spot on the shelf drives sales through increased awareness and impulse sale, especially around holidays and birthdays and it incentivises retailers to push your product for their own benefit. Publishers don't want to give up that powerful shelf space and are trying to cut corners while raising prices. Sales figures are showing that these fake physical releases aren't selling and pretty soon the big box stores are going to get mad because they are losing shelf space and storage space which could be used more efficiently for something which isn't making much money. Investors aren't blind to the fact that full releases are generating a lot more revenue at big box stores compared to keys either. If it continues down this path the publishers will be forced into full releases

And I'd get that if it was somehow impossible for any of these games to have a normal release, but there isn't. The majority of cross-platform titles for Switch 1 and 2 have normal releases on the former. Sparking Zero has a normal release despite being 6GB. I blame both Nintendo for this new format and how expensive normal carts supposedly are, and third parties for accepting this shitty format despite having millions to produce normal releases.

They should just charge more for physical games and put it on an actual cart.

>muh retailers

Digital books are cheaper than physical books, this argument is retarded.

I'm not buying game key cards. Nintendo first party games aren't game key cards anyway, and they're the only games worth playing on Nintendo consoles in the first place. Why would anyone play a game on switch when they can play on PC?

Key cards are the worst of both worlds. You don't get the convenience of a regular digital download, nor do you get to truly own your game like a regular physical copy. Key cards existing is just baffling to me. This is a horrible format Nintendo has created.

Physical becomming scarce just means my physical games become more valuable
