Why are smug bastard characters so popular among gamers?

Do not distrust Alarak because he's from a race of scheming murderous psychopaths, distrust him because even in that society he was considered a fucking asshole

it reflects the average microsoft-activision-blizztroon way of thinking when they pay for their inferior copies of successful games and then invade the threads of other, better games saying their shoddy turbo-casualized dadgamer-friendly ripoff is the "king of (genre)".

Good writing + good voice acting is a powerful thing.

Damn, playing Alarak was the most fun I ever had in a moba. The voice acting helped, but the mechanics carried.

Multiplayer games are battles of will, mechanics, and knowledge. A gamer who beats his opponent implicitly knows he's superior in one of those three categories and thus, feels smug. Things get convoluted and messy in team games, technical issues, or just any old reason that causes a loss of performance. But, a win is a win. Depending on how emotionally mature they are, there would be no smugness. But, due to the selfish choice to isolate and game all day, gaming is the only skill developed causing a feedback loop of smugness because they have nothing else going for them.
