8 + 11 = 96

If n is the number left of the + then the answer is n^2 + 4n. The number right of the + is irrelevant.

It's 96. First number multiplied by the second number plus the first number again.
So It's really 1+(1x4) = 5, 2+(2x5) = 12, 3+(3x6) = 21, and 8+(8x11) = 96.

Why would that be a more correct answer than continuous additions?
First row is 1+4=5 second row is 1+4+2+5=12 third row is 1+4+2+5+3+6=21 and last row is 1+4+2+5+3+6+8+11=40
Given that neither solutions make use of proper notation it only comes down to which answer you want to impose as the correct one

Reality is they didn't write this problem correctly, as always. Leave it to math freaks to never properly write their equations and call it a brain-teaser. It's academically dishonest.

The game's answer is 60
However, in the first we can impose any number, we can even say she drove zero miles (the simplest and funniest way to explain this), meaning our algebraic goal is 180 miles.
In the return trip, this means she drove 150 miles and he drove 30, making the difference 30, since this means the road was 180 miles.
30 is a valid answer that does solve the equation, it's just not the answer the game expects from you.

Any answer that reveals a logical pattern is valid, it's the tester's fault if the rules they desired weren't declared. You could just as easily say that you're incrementing the amount to add to the current tally by two each iteration.

I wish school had this mindset. I can excuse a video game because there's no mediator to recognize the different interpretation, but schools are often like "Yes, how you solved it with the way you interpreted it was right HOWEVER it wasn't what the INTENDED interpretation so you still get deductions off your grade!!!!" and some teachers would deliberately use trick questions all the time. Fuck those teachers, I wish I had a council I could go to in those BS scenarios.

What? That doesn't seem right. If distance is 180 then the difference is still 60.
You: 180(going)+30(returning)
Her: 0(going)+150(returning)
(180+30)-(0+150)=60.
The answer is always 60.
