I don't think there's that much to write home about but it's still a good and fun traditional JRPG. Very nice visuals for the time too.

People love it because of the open world and air travel but it's mid in terms of mechanics.

If they did a remaster in current day it wouldn't hold up.

like a lot of jrpgs from that period the cast is very charming and the game looks and sounds good but the random battles get really repetitive both in number in that you hit a point where you are objectively best off doing the same moves over and over and over

it makes exploring for hidden spots really annoying when you constantly get jumped
Anonymous No.717217415 [Report]
>>717216171 (OP)
classic but the mechanics are janky and you can waste your time accidentally. most special moves are useless

Might be but there is surprisingly enough depth to combat
Especially when you fight optional bosses
Plus it is fun when every single enemy wants to insta-kill you

A bit overrated but I wouldn't call it trash though. The game systems just aren't all that interesting and the air ship battles take so fucking long that they become almost tedious. It has some cool moments though, but PS2 JRPGs mog it hard.

I have no idea what the fuck were they thinking when they decide that in the overworld you need to be attacked every 5 seconds by enemies that dodge all your attacks
If you have the patience to tolerate that it's a fun animey game that has the sort of tropes where the villain team has a sexy girl one, a muscle one and a brainac one

Excellent atmosphere, aesthetics, music and the characters are fun. Gameplay is mostly standard JRPG shit but if you enjoyed something like the Suikoden series, you'll feel right at home. The game hype up that sense of adventure which is truly impeccable.
Though like other JRPGs within its time, zoomers wouldn't get it. You actually have to be born in that era to appreciate it.

7/10 game. I bought both versions (dc and cube).
However, playing it in 2025 it's a relative 8, possibly 9/10, simply because the genre has gotten so much worse overall.

*I will ad this, it's one of the few games in the genre that doesn't take itself too seriously and stays fairly focused on adventure without convoluted nonsense that is so overbearing in a lot of JRPGs.
That alone makes it really refreshing and i would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the first 2 Lunar games, and Grandia.

Genuine classic, but also a bit overrated. The battle system was less complex than a bunch of SNES JRPGs, much less anything on the PS1. Yeah it had ship battles, but it just felt like there was more they could have done with positioning in both battles. Like if they remade it but turned the battles into a hybrid of JRPG + tactics battles it'd be ideal.

do not listen to this man he is your enemy.
play the gamecube version. after you get to the first city, fly north and there's a gamecube exclusive merchant in a small boat that sells an item that disables random battles in the overworld.
you don't need the experience from these battles there is more than enough xp from dungeons to complete the game. this VASTLY improves the overall experience of the game. the overworld battles suck and this completely removes them letting you explore in peace. dungeon random battles remain unaffected.

Genuine classic that suffers from the same issues as Legend of Dragoon; it's really really slow in combat. I didn't mind it back when the game was new (I first played this with the Gamecube release) but it's pretty rough now.
Unlike Legend of Dragoon because of the timing shit though, you can emulate this one and map a button to fast forward for when animations play in combat.

She was going to join the party and even confront Ramirez about the Aquila
But I get it had to be scaled back, even in the Legends edition

Gameplay was below average due to zero difficulty. Random encounters are dealt with Aika's Lambda Burst and boss battles were about buffing Vyse or Drachma and using their first super move. Ship battle with the Little Jack were great but once you get the Delphinus you once again become overpowered and have to try hard to destroy yourself.

Everything else was pretty good. I know the translation had zero accuracy and was basically fanfiction compared to the Japanese version but I still got a kick out of it as a teenager.
It really need a remaster with Dreamcast audio, Gamecube content, and an optional feature to turn off random encounters.

It fixed the encounter rate issue on the GC version, but even STILL it feels slightly overbearing. So imagine how bad it was on DC. Otherwise it's alright, got a lot of charm. As do most games of that era.

I don't particularly care about JRPGs anymore, but there's some classics out there too that are worth a shot. Kind of like Dark Cloud is worth playing too.
