Recently got into dreamcast emu, played this game on a whim today and i'm already in the mines of the ugly bastard town (he's literally me). I always assumed dreamcast oldfags and hipsters were just spouting cope when they said this game was good, I was wrong.

Is Ryudo not such a tryhard in the Japanese version? He looks kinda douchy just going by the design.

Depends. Grandia 1 is an adventure, Grandia 2 has a more traditional JRPG story. I like Grandia 2 better.

Not sure exactly why Ryudo's character design required wearing a pack 24/7, sets off my autism, though I recognize it could be autism that would drive a man to never take off his backpack. I digress.

Grandia 1 & 2 are among my favorite jrpgs. I tried getting into Child of Light because it had a similar action bar battle system, but the story was too artsy fartsy for my weeb sensibilities.

Grandia 2 is such a different game besides some shared elements that it basically is like Final Fantasy with each installment being substantially different, without even sharing worlds. G1 is a very different title from G2 altogether, it's not really easy to compare them directly in that sense.

Haven't played E33, I just thought Dreamcast rpg's were shit and it was just the schmup, shenue and SA1 machine so i never touched it until now.
Illbleed is another good DC i played last week. I miss when AAA games were fun.

It's a little of both. It's incredibly trope-laden, but Millenia happens to be sultry and smug in a way that is pleasing to the boner. The weakness in character is Ryudo not being able to have a proper arc as the elements never build fully and the antagonist not having engaging enough motivations to carry the supposed twist of the game. They really did the villains wrong, with all of them being evil for the sake thereof rather than for some greater purpose.

Play it however you want, but there's no real challenging content of the game if you use the tools the game gives you. It just so happens that maxing the cancel skills make them essentially instant, so you can bully bosses pretty easily with them. Tio's is AOE so you can just start ravaging everything.

I'll add that the only hard content of the game are a few power-spikes at "random" spots. Valmar's Heart and Melfice are the only two bosses that really hurt in my opinion. Some people say the eye can fuck you but I never had issues. The Heart has a really strong AOE that it can spam if you get back luck, and Melfice debuffs the shit out of you to the point where the battle can take forever if you aren't prepared for it. Neither of these bosses are endgame.

It's weird because the spoken dialog is relatively fine. It's a lot of the incidental scenes that read like they're localized to shit.
>>717226550
Still better than Grandia 1 where the story just spins its wheels and every line of dialog is two 12 year olds saying a variation of
>LET'S GO TO [place] AND HAVE AN ADVENTURE!!!!!!!!
Juvenile bullshit dialog everywhere nearly ruins it. I'll take the adult characters with actual personalities in 2 over the retarded one note children of 1.

Yeah it's tight. I think that's what helped drag me in, I was expecting a longer slow jrpg opening where i wouldn't really be in the game for like 10 hours (and expected to drop it and play more Illbleed or try record of lodoss) and instead it was just to the point and i'm out the door on the main journey in like 20 minutes. Plus the ryudo geohound chad protag helps.

It has good story pacing that gets better as it goes on, which means lots of good climactic moments, and a fun party that routinely shuffles. I remember it being a little grindy at the start where you're just with Elena in the mountains but it gets better and better.
