>$49 for a Nintendo console back in the early 00's
>$400 now for the Switch 1, and prices never decreased, only increased

Why is this allowed?

cost of tech in current years means that a $50 gameing system wouldn't have any hard drive, and still runs on dvd/blueray, with the computing output of maybe a $150 phone. You wouldn't tolerate this sort of standards considering phones and PC

$50 was a deep discount price when the Wii was coming out which could also play all GameCube games anyways.
$100 was the standard price for years, though.

Don't expect prices to ever lower unless drastic changes happen. They'll just keep going up in these completely artifical managed economies. Remember how they always say offshoring production would only lower prices? Yeah, that was a lie to anyone with a brain. It's just a fraud for companies to cut their own costs and cheapen the quality, but still charge you the absolute maximum so they get even more profit.

This picture was probably taken much later than you claim. There was a period where GameCubes cost fucking nothing. PS4's are hitting that phase right now.
The only reason this image exists is that it was noteworthy to see GameCubes on shelves. It was likely after the Wii was released.

Trump elected was a dream come true for Nintendo. They now have an acceptable boogeyman to blame as an excuse to raise prices even though it's just one orange man from burgerland.
The only action is to not pay. Thankfully Nintendo makes that process simple by releasing trash and a Mario Kart that got sidelined again while I still play double dash.

LMAO it's not a COVID problem... this is very much an "America" problem.

It's almost like tariffs increases prices or something.

It's almost like increasing prices is the EXPLICIT purpose of tariffs for punishing you, the consumer, for daring to buy foreign instead of domestic products and tries to forcefully make domestic products more competitive on the home market not by making them cheaper or better, but by making everything else more expensive.

>REEEE WHY CANT SWITCH 2 BE LIKE OLD I REMEMBER BUY GAMECUBE FOR $50
The brain of the person who posted this is unironically unfathomable.
The whole marketing for the gamecube was that it was dirt cheap the problem being you could only play a few games on it because it could barely run anything.
The gamecube had like 700 games total compared to PS2's 4000 so you wouldn't even want it at end of life.
Not even including the thing couldn't play music CDs or DvDs which was a big thing back then.

>tariffs
Current inflation spike initiated years before Drumpf's second term and had to do with anti-oil policies - turns out when you screw over the price of oil, which is the standard fuel source for transportation of goods, everything else gets more expensive - who would've thought?
As for tariffs, if people actually paid attention, they'd actually do some research and see that the vast majority of tariffs were walked back, and were tools to renegotiate trade deals.

This gen has been a shitshow for anyone paying attention. Never mind the fact that the hardware quality / durability is in the toilet (rampant joycon failures, cheap sticks in general, horribly designed for repairs, etc.). And the 1st/2nd party software hasn't been anything to write home about either. Modern Nintendo games are more sterile than previous entries within an IP, and they're almost entirely redundant with those older games.

Makes you wonder. Did secondaries enable the runaway success of the console, or are people simply accustomed to being fleeced by entertainment companies? The concept of the Switch was god-tier, but the execution was sloppy and slimy.

What is it that you think optimizing is? League runs on a toaster but genuinely has such shit programing that changing one thing changes 90 others.
The only "optimization" is adding the option to use low res polygons and textures from 2002 which is basically graphically programming a whole other game and most old games want to go the other way and as soon as they do people complain about it being poorly optimized instead of understanding maybe 10 year old hardware isn't up to date.

They got it to run but that's about as much as you can say about it. It runs like ass and has all kinds of issues exclusive to it including straight up crashes which I'm sure isn't what you imagine when you say "optimized".
The problem is usually you, there's a select few games where optimization is the problem.
They can't magically make the game better on dogshit hardware just like the best they could do actually putting people on the job was sub 30 fps with crashes and graphical bugs out the ass.

Just look at the sorry ass bait in this thread. Except I really do not think its bait. I think that its a generational thing and these corporate boot lickers want to defend this shit at all costs. There could also be an element of hatred or jealousy going on here. They can't do shit to the industry so instead they will vent frustrations on "boomers" and tell you to go fuck yourself or oh well just get a job and pay up you bum. Generation Z has shown just how pathetic they are. Its largely because of them that gaming is in the state it is in. And you just know these lazy ass single moms are impulse buying all this slop for their ungrateful little shits to since its a fantastic babysitter for their child. It should not surprise us gaming keeps getting worse. Boot lickers are all over the place now. At least you got guys like Ross helping to change something about the sorry ass state of today's gaming industry.

Iwata was the last guy in charge who actually gave a shit about games being fun before they were monetized to hell and sold as service models. The dude took a pay cut to save jobs during the Wii U flop-can you imagine Furukawa or any of the current suits doing that today? Nah, they'd launch a $70 remaster of Wii Sports, call it "deluxe", and charge you another subscription to play online with two maps missing. Switch had so much soul potential, but instead we got cardboard accessories and $10 cloud saves.

The US price excludes taxes because there is no national sales tax in the US

A $450 item would cost exactly $450 in Montana or Oregon because they have no sales tax. It'd cost $489 in California or New York because lmao shitlibs. Every European country has over double the sales tax of the highest taxed jurisdictions in the US.

They need the fucking games for that to work. Spinoffs and experiments alone aren't going to cut it for long. The first Direct of the gen being a mediocre Partner Showcase was not exactly reassuring either (that's why it went over so poorly). They already wasted their Mario Kart wad at launch, only for it to be divisive due to pushing unlapped races so hard.

It's really funny how so many people don't realize how rapidly and frivolously they're spending their Switch 1 goodwill.

Really depends on the ranking criteria, and even then, it can hard to narrow down the list to one. If someone asks me to recommend which Nintendo games to play (out of the entire catalogue), I'm going to recommend they primarily stick to Gens 4-6 and dip their toes into Gen 7.

As a rule of thumb, I don't think anything after Gen 6 should be considered the "best" of anything positive. Gen 7 was the beginning of the end, and the industry has been going downhill ever since.

Wrong. Lots of PS5 games are low powered shovelware. The same as every other gaming platform.

Game console generations are solely based on when it came out. How powerful the system is doesn't impact on what "gen" the system is. Ouya was an 8th Generation system.

Just like my brand new triple AAAs! And somehow, I can play this with 2005 hardware! Who knew the ATI Xenos was as powerful as the 4090?
Wait, you're telling me the 4090 is leagues above the Xenos? But gee, that can only mean modern devs are not optimizing their games properly, which would be, you know, my fucking point from the very beginning?

Nintendo has no such advantage. Furukawa is simply cashing in goodwill from the Switch at a rapid rate and doing a shit job of fostering content to replenish or counter the lost goodwill.
