Only one I can think of is that the palaces are linear(or mostly are, I don't remember) because of the necessity of items from previous ones.
Would've been better with less gating, but it's a really small flaw in the scheme of it. Zelda games have had way worse.

Maybe I just suck at this game. But I don't like the controls. How Link swings his sword combined with the directional movement always feels really awkward and I feel it can be finicky to get the intended angle of your attacks.

How were you supposed to know you could suddenly buy a big pink bomb from the dark world shop, that you then needed to use on the grand pyramid, to then throw your arrows in there to upgrade them to silver arrows?

Thank God.
30 years of the same formula is enough and most people agree LTTP is the best one, so the formula has been getting stale for over 30 years.

I know, change is scaaaary

the middle dark world dungeons are uninspired padding, the vast majority of them are just interchangeable enemy gauntlets between the 2-3 memorable unique rooms. even the overworld methods of entering some of these dungeons are uninspired and boring. i would go beyond the cold argument that dark world dungeons could be merged into fewer better levels, and go as far as to say swamp and thieves town in particular could probably be removed entirely and it would improve the game overall.

lots of the spritework is horrendous, esp on items and npcs. getting the silver arrows from a fat brown bitch ruins the tone right before the final boss and the last sword upgrade comes too late for it to have time to shine. all the bosses are really simple and non-challenges.

link between worlds is the definitive version and probably the best zelda next to link's awakening

I bet that did happen to some kids. I read about a guy who got stuck on Phantasy Star's starting area because a guard says "unless you hope to die, you had best stay here". He assumed he was to find something there that'd make the guard change his mind and say "k you can leave now".

It’s almost poetic how games used to assume players had patience, imagination, and the willingness to brute force weird puzzles with zero guidance. Modern design would slap you with a cutscene, UI marker, and a voiceover tutorial before you even get stuck. Those long-dark room moments where you randomly bomb a wall out of desperation? That’s the real soul of old-school gaming.

The simple answer is that old video games were perfectly fine walling players because players who beat the game in one sitting dont rent a second time. Really old games were extra happy to wall players because players who are alive for long periods of time dont put in coins.

>desperation
>implying gamers didn't do it for fun to see what happens
Playing DX, I once dragged every crate I could - explosive ones included - to the top of the 'Ton, and first tried to drop them on people's heads to see if it would damage or kill them. After I was satisfied(it didn't seem to), I started chucking the dynamite for laughs instead.
Real gamers don't wait to get desperate. We do shit because it's there and we can.

Casualized dogshit. Start of the "every item is just a key for a specialized lock" aspect of Zelda.
