There's no such thing as real matchmaking in games. They designed it on purpose to force a 50/50 win rate

You cannot argue againsy SBMM without making it clear you're either a shitter or just want to shit on people weaker than you
You can't argue against games with read based combat without making it clear that you're a shitter or a reactiontard
You cannot argue against turn-based combat without making it clear that you just have a low attention span

Anything else I'm missing?

I can. My argument is that it doesn't fucking work. If it did then games would be a close win/loss yet every game that has it gives me 0-10 teammates that avoid the objective at all costs. If we're all at the same skill level then how is there so many one-sided matches?

in team based games you get an apparent modifier in the form of a teammate still in the process of learning the controls

What game? Different games use different matchmaking systems on top of SBMM such as instead putting players on to teams based on their individual elo/winloss record so that a player determined to have high skill is placed with a player with low skill to help even out the overall ability of a team etc etc.

it's because of the team aspect. 1v1 games don't give you a free out to say that your team was bad (which is why they're less popular)

They should just toss in people in match making servers at random to the closest servers that's it especially for casual play modes. Multiplayer games should aim to:
> Reward players who get more kills with fun unlocks during the match.
> Reward players who get kills with less of a re-spawn timer per kills get.
> Punish bad players to wait their turn if they die without kills/suicide by accident.
This would create a gameplay loop of success rewarding further success and which is why modern gaming sucks because it doesn't.

yeah that's right
while 1v1 games usually devolve to complaining about "cheap tactics" and "overpowered characters", the bottom line is always (YOU) LOST NIGGA
while team competitions allow players to offload too much responsibility onto their fellows, which is why the default complaint about matchmaking is le forced fifty/fifty, reducing the results of every match to your team

I played Dota (the warcraft mod) for many years in the environment you're asking for.
Someone would make a game and random people would join, some games would say that it was for people a certain skill level (eg: no noobs).
The result was that most games were shit. In your head you think you're going to be fighting against people you're somewhat better than and you're going to jerk your pecker at carrying the game.
What would actually happen is that 50% of your team and enemy team will be worse than low difficulty bots. It would be like they're not playing the game.
That's not even getting into the amount of leavers and other grieving that happens in a heterogeneous skill environment.
Due to being coddled by skill based matchmaking you don't understand how bad the average player is. It's not fun beating up retards who can't fight back, it really isn't.
It's also not a given that these braindead players will be evenly distributed. You may well be one of a number of highers skill players taking part of the stomp, so you're not going to feel special for being oh so skilled, because the guy who's less skilled than you on your team can get as many kills against the patatoes as you.
Or it could be that you're the sole non-patatoe on your team against a lineup of competent.

All in all you're not going to have a fun time, you just don't know it because you were not around for pre-matchmaking multiplayer.

no system is perfect and over time your advanced skill should make you win more. it's called the law of large numbers look it up. and the system definitely works as it's supposed to do due to various advanced players consistently managing to reach their previous rank after restarting from the beginning.

But you don't understand. The game intentionally singles him out and gives him shit teammates, and there's absolutely no way that someone who's actually good at the game would be able to win in his place.

Form a group with other good people. If you're good at the game, you won't have a problem finding good people who want to play with you.

I haven't played DotA, CS, or any other multiplayer game without people I know for years now beyond the occasional pickup match, and every time I do play solo I always regret it. Don't subject yourself to it, and don't complain you don't want to talk to people while playing a team game.

It's easier to account for individual skill in games where you have no team variable. There will be no situation where someone in a fighting game is randomly too high of a rank than they should be the same way someone's GF in marvel rivals gets boosted to Grandmaster by spamming auto aim heal darts and pressing Q every few minutes.

I played a lot of CoH2 in 1v1, but even when I play 2v2 I do it with a buddy. If I do 4v4, I accept I'm playing an imbalanced party game. You can't design a game that's balanced at every team size between 1v1 and 5v5, it's why no one tries to balance CoH for large games and why League got rid of its 3v3 mode.

Not that I care about matchmaking vs server browser games (I like both depending on the context), but the average player is, by definition, average. The problem you're finding with lower skill levels is that every particular multiplayer game suffers a contraction after some time where the bottom falls out--in DotA's case, many Herald players leaving after repeatedly getting stomped leaving an imbalanced system that results in very new players being thrown in against veterans. There's just not enough other new players in the mix for them to reliably get a match without waiting upwards of 30 minutes.

For example, I'm Legend and the last solo game I did I still got grouped with someone who's account showed he had only played three games total. Naturally, that player didn't even know the very basics of DotA and spent most of the game getting jumped on in lane and wound up being 0/13 at 20 minutes in.

All games suffer from this over time, attrition hits the worst players first since the bottom of any game is by default the punch bag for the rest of the playerbase. The few people left just wind up filtering into games beyond their skill level and drag it down for everyone else. Until games figure out how to solve this, such as enforcing strict matchmaking at various tiers that completely prevents skill disparity from being matched together, it's going to keep happening.

DotA's battle cup is actually pretty good for this if you don't mind playing around its schedule. You'll always fight 5v5 premade teams and there's enough in queue where you're likely to find an even match. Most players don't want to put in the time to form a team for it though.

It's because elo and glicko actually work fine for 1v1. None of these systems were mathematically built around ad hoc teams.
You aren't even supposed to maintain an individual rating in a team in these systems at all. Elo can be applied to a college basketball team playing a season worth of games to gauge the team's strength relative to other college basketball teams playing that season. What elo can't do is take 40 random college students, put them onto two basketball teams, and then declare the elo of the teams much less the individual players.

Honestly team games should enforce the formation of an actual team akin to how real sports do it.

>Play DotA
>Have to form a team of at least 5, but your team can have 10-20 people in it
>When playing matches, you can form a group of 5 from any of the players on your team and that's the only way to play ranked games
>The team has a rank together as a team and has to self-police to enforce a certain level of skill
>You play only other organized teams, no random groups or anything like that

Only reason this isn't done is it makes splitting the prize money from tournaments too difficult, but it would really improve the scene significantly. After the hero draft phase, people could swap in or out or you could give players a break after a long match.

not really related to matchmaking unless you're saying that the matchmaking is better specifically with teams vs teams instead of randos
just sounds like you're saying "game is better with friends" which isn't exactly a hot take

Team games already try to match you against the same amount of premades if you're in competitive.

It's not a hot take, but for some reason it eludes most of /v/ who continues to try to play team games alone.
