Why don't they make more games that have a focus on side quests and side material? This game had TERRIBLE dungeons and I always dread replaying them and rebeating bosses but the quests were so kino.

Nah they're right. The only "interesting" dungeon was the inverted stone tower.

For whatever reason all Zelda games HAVE to have some variation of forest, fire, and water stages.

Yeah, it’s like they’re contractually obligated to stick to the elemental trio every single time. I get the tradition angle, but it just ends up feeling stale after a few games. Inverted Stone Tower was the only time they actually went galaxy-brain with design and mechanics. Everything else feels like dev autopilot. Would kill for a game that ditched the formula entirely and just leaned into weird, interconnected side content. You can tell that’s where the dev passion was.

Because publishers don't want time and money wasted mainly on stuff some people might miss It's why secret/multiple endings fell out of style too.

Agreed. Like even in this game we got another setting outside of Hyrule, which means cannocally there are other kingdoms. It would be cool if they explored other areas of the world and had some different stages.

Like look at OoT, the Spirit Temple was really cool and using the mechanic of having to turn back into kid Link was really cool (I wish they did more of that). Shadow Temple was a fucking TORTURE dungeon and was next to a cemetery. They could never make that again now.

By that logic, Woodfall and the Stone Temple are also fire temples by virtue of having torches.
In addition to all of the temples in Oot + Dodongo's Cavern + the Deku Tree.

Because that's a design philosophy born out of limitations, in this case hardware and time limitations. Most games nowadays have more than enough horsepower and can take a decade to be developed, so there's no reason to expand on secondary goals on the world they created.

Stop being an autist it's clearly meant to be the MM equivalent of Fire Temple with its vertical design. Ice and snow instead of fire and lava is just cosmetic.

Even Nintendo themselves don't like majora. What you're asking for has been deemed 'unviable' by basically every corporation on the planet.
Also MM had great dungeons that use the transformation masks in fun ways.

MM has 3 of the better dungeons in the 3D games until Skyward Sword.
Stone Tower's only problem is the ocarina song, which will inevitably be streamlined with modding if it hasn't happened already.

>the MM equivalent

they're inverted dungeons.

>swamp temple - sunken jungle - inverted forest
>ice temple - frozen volcano - inverted ire
>sewer temple - steel water management facility - inverted water

finally stone temple tower is an earth temple that actually inverts itself into a sky temple.

everything is topsy turvy in termina... the MOON is coming DOWN.

It was rushed, with the guy who directed it (Koizumi) basically being forced to make it. Aonuma is clearly embarrased by it to, considering all the "fixes" he tried to do in MM3D.

i can agree with your assessment of quality, but only extending to woodfall. it's too short, the theme of being dank poisonous and spooky isn't sold very well, and the boss is absurdly easy. if you don't count the OoT child dungeons, i'd say it's probably the worst overall dungeon from the N64 zelda era.
however, the temples are at least mid-tier, beating out a chunk of competition from OoT.

They hated it much that they kicked Koizumi off of Zelda forever. To be fair, it was considered the "black sheep" for awhile. Sakurai gave it some love in Smash though and even the Animal Crossing team added Anju's shirt in the NA version of the GameCube game so it wasn't entirely loathed. It was mainly Aonuma and Miyamoto getting brutally mogged at improvising Zelda lore that made them decide he shouldn't be directing it anymore.

Why was it ever considered a black sheep? I loved it as a kid and so did the other kids in knew of that played it. It was just another fun Zelda game to us, but on fairness kids aren't that picky when it comes to games.

Aonuma wanted to make wind waker, so shiggy told him he could, but only if he managed to make one last N64 zelda.
Koizumi was dragged in because they wanted to steal his time loop idea for his cops and robbers game that never got made.

it's not that it was received poorly, it's that the behind-the-scenes for the game is entirely constructed on lazy practices and tricky design.
when you look at the game with a wider view, it's a massive asset flip with completely made up lore and uses a system mechanic that forces players to pace themselves and constantly repeat content to actually complete the game. the three-day system EXTREMELY artificially lengthens the amount of existing content in the game.
this is a lot of what would be considered bad practice, and for a mainline zelda game? i can understand why nintendo would be internally quite negative about this. it's like music artists who hate their own hit singles, like jani lane of warrant's "cherry pie", a song that was written in 15 minutes on the back of a pizza box. they consider it below the creative effort that should be required for one of their crown jewel franchises.
Anonymous No.717285931 [Report] >>717289065
>>717285183
It was mainly the time limit mechanic, saving, and some small things that made it off-putting for casual players. Basically look up the list of changes from MM3D and it'll paint a picture of how the original didn't appeal to everyone. Especially when it came out right after OoT, which is a tough act to follow.

The time mechanic was very unique and to this date there really hasn't been anything made like it. Plus it's probably one of the darkest Zelda games in terms of story and people accepting their inevitable fate.

Most of the updates are basically quality of life improvements and allowing you to better choose what time to warp to so you don't have to wait.
Anonymous No.717289446 [Report] >>717289945

No Ganon, no Zelda, Time mechanic and it reused a lot of the same assets. It didn't get sell nearly as much as OoT did though so it took awhile for people to actually play it.

Shit taste. The poison water and the rotating flowers in the swamp temple, and the entire pillar in the center of the snow temple are top tier. I also like the Great Bay Temple, but collecting all the fairies is my least favorite part of that section of the game.

Funny how it's the "black sheep" but basically sold the same as Wind Waker even though it came out at the end of the N64's lifecycle.

Also it's no wonder TotK is basically BoW2, this is likely where they'll take the series going forward.
