it's not that it was received poorly, it's that the behind-the-scenes for the game is entirely constructed on lazy practices and tricky design.
when you look at the game with a wider view, it's a massive asset flip with completely made up lore and uses a system mechanic that forces players to pace themselves and constantly repeat content to actually complete the game. the three-day system EXTREMELY artificially lengthens the amount of existing content in the game.
this is a lot of what would be considered bad practice, and for a mainline zelda game? i can understand why nintendo would be internally quite negative about this. it's like music artists who hate their own hit singles, like jani lane of warrant's "cherry pie", a song that was written in 15 minutes on the back of a pizza box. they consider it below the creative effort that should be required for one of their crown jewel franchises.
