Why are modern consoles just budget AMD PCs now? What happened to highly customized architecture (Saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, PS3)

Because most people play Call of Duty and other slop like titles. They have become COD boxes with a handful of exclusives. At least the PS5 anyways. And a GTA 6 waiting room.

modern computers are too complicated and development costs too bloated to have highly unique hardware for each company and expect things to work out financially. Things are going to keep homogenizing until you're tired of it, and then homogenize some more. PS7 (not PS6 it's already in development) and steam deck 2 are probably going to be ARM.

No point investing in R&D when modern CPUs can do anything you can ask for.

Custom was a thing back then simply because the tech simply wasn't there and they have to squeeze every Mhz they can.

Idk but games like Arkham Knight still look beautiful today and that was made on unreal engine 3.

Honestly I don't think you'd lose much by making games on PS3 cell architecture type thing. Just don't make it as cancerous to develop for it.

You'd probably cut out 90% of the slop because they are too incompetent to develop for your console. I think it's a win win, you'd just need one 10/10 game to get you started.

It was also a matter of transistor count.
ASIC solutions use a lot less transistors than just shoving a bunch of CPUs that run code.

Nowadays we have infinite transistors and moore's law is alive and well and things just fall of price every 18 months, so we have no reason whatsoever to make ASIC solutions anymore.
Just watch the $299 PS6 drop at any time now and completely demolish the PS5 in performance.

We had a switch from "artistically faking aspects of real lite" to "doing it for real", which is a lot heavier.

But it just happens that the "faking it" was so good, we basically got a downgrade in visual quality.
