If you have to read secondary material to understand a character from a game, then that game is pure garbage.

I always got the strong sense that the writing in ME3 was mainly trying to justify all the stuff that was done for multiplayer reasons. Like Cerberus and the Rachni were done the way they were because they were included as alternate enemies in the multiplayer mode, then the singleplayer game had to use the same assets, and the writing had to make that make sense.
