Got backlog fatigue so I decided to start going through a bunch of the older classic RPGMaker games since I've never played any of them. Just got done with Witch's House and finished Ib before that, figured I'd make a thread for recommendations and discussion on some of these games.

That makes 2 recs for Yume Nikki so I guess that one's next. I know a little bit about it, like LSD Dream Emulator was an inspiration for it and I played that while bone tired from insomnia in a dark room at 4 AM so if I could enjoy that then Yume Nikki sounds right up my alley.

Space Funeral is a classic, fairly short and fun.

I once played this, but never finished it, I don't even know what to think about it, kind of gay.
Also there was this "horror" game where the player was followed by coathangers at some point if I recall correctly, anyone knows its name?

I remember playing this RPG called Nocturne Rebirth.
This game had this gimmick that you manually level up and the challenge was that you had to your level under a certain point to get a Brave Clear which gives you a bonus item. You choose to level up when ever to just stop on the bosses if you wanted but if you wanted some of the good shit, you had to keep your level under the dungeon's limit.

The Way is pretty fucking good. A Blurred Line is really good too except the follow up has been in development hell for 20 years. Three the Hard Way is decent.

There's also one I remember liking called Love and War. It's basic RPG stuff but I found it quite charming. Only problem is that it was supposed to be part 1 of a trilogy but the author would rather jerk off to his female lead character than finish his fucking work.

There's plenly of those but they're often unimpressive and amateurish. Most popular RPGMaker games being basically non-games is just a consequence of the engine being used by non-devs, aka artists and writers, to turn their stories into a simple interactive media. I'd imagine people who wanted to be serious about gamedev would've chosen a more powerful engine.

You probably want it to be made in a different engine. If I made it in a different engine, would it be "better"? In the first place, you have the principle of decision paralysis. If I know an engine, you take it and give me a completely different one, but which? You, tell me to make it from the ground up. This can lead one to lose the fun. VampireGODS always tend to have the best games especially if they're RPGs. The only recent vampire game that was released in the last 10 years that I've had a fun time playing is Ravensburg. You can't form the same amount of vampire thralls as you do in Vampires Dawn but you have more than 10 companions to choose from and each one has their own quest. I can’t say this for the battles. The battles are very explicitly in default RPGmaker and many use generic parallax backgrounds, as well as default visual and sound effects. The overworld and presentation of everything else in the game more than makes up for it, though.
