I finished the first game (+dlc) and am currently near the end of the second one.
I'd say they're very different thematically, and the puzzles never get quite as hard as in the original (which wasn't that hard overall).
I can see why some people would think the sequel is worse, especially if they quit early. It's missing Milton's character or some other cynic flinging shit from the side.
