We lost the ability for transparency without dithering since most engines moved to deferred rendering as standard. Kinda like working mirrors in bathrooms: lost tech.

That's exaggerated BS cope.
Just about every major game since 2007 and STALKER:SoC has a been deferred renderer game.

Real time mirrors have been doable since N64 days. Literally.

And those gratings would be piss easy to pull off, but nu-fag devs cannot even cook up a decent AA method to fight alpha jaggies.

yes also based upon my own personal experiences, AI upscalers like DLSS struggle with transparency, even when you force games to run the newest 4th gen DLSS. They get this weird grid like property and has that half loaded in feel.

...at what time?
Max Payne 2 already used them everywhere.
Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 used them for everything from water reflections to TV monitors (render-2-texture tech), and they ran just fine on first-gen 128MB DX9 cards, 21 years ago.

Have people not realized that we're currently running like up to 16000% faster GPU hardware than what we had just a while back?

>hey scale exponentially with resolution, since they're rerendering everything multiple times.
Wrong again.
Why the fuck won't this ancient meme die??

First of all, Planar / R2T projections use their own camera and output, which can be adjusted. The "mirror" seldom uses 1:1 the same rendering resolution nor max framerate as the playing screen, nor does it have to load all of the assets and special effects, with the same LOD.

Second, the reflective surface does not need to be "on" at all times. When it's out of the view, or far away, it can be toggled off, or replaced with something more performant.

Last: we still got graphics cards that are at least 15k times faster than what we got in the mid-00s. And many games released the past few years, Hitman included, prove that you can do real time reflections just fine, without RTX shit, that always runs worse.

no, there is nothing exponential about it. a second camera can at worst double your frametime. regardless of resolution. unless you're saying they would have multiple planar reflections in one view. that would be crazy. nobody would do that.

1bit transparency masks which are completely sharp, as pixel can only be pure black, or pure white. so even if you have a 4k mask, which would be like 200mb sitting in vram, it's still pixelated. so they make a 1k mask, then slap taa on top to blur it. dlss is the best at fixing it, but the second motion happens, it's back to smear city.

No, literally. The technology is effectively gone.

Game engines keep refactoring for cinematic slop, and require entire armies of coders to operate and integrate with. That kind of manpower is out of just about every studio's budget and even big names are struggling to cope with it, see Bethesda shitting the bed on the Oblivion remaster. Your only options are - Drop your FPS in half with bandaid solutions, drop half your games budget in coders to fix it, or just drop transparencies entirely and work around it. It's why everyone is complaining about modern games looking like shit, none of the engines are so overbloated and complex now that nobody can realistically use them.

Deferred rendering supports clipped transparency which is what you would use for metal grating and fences.
Most deferred rendering engines have a forward rendering fallback for translucent objects too.
The dithering is a hack mainly used for hair because forward rendering translucency in a deferred rendering engine typically have sorting and/or shading issues.

Why they changed from a metal grating material to a sheet metal material is likely an artist oversight or an intentional decision considering they had plenty of metal grating in Dead Space Remake (also a frostbite game)

Yeah that's reasonable I think. Maybe 1 over the limit for vsync gsync shenanigans, don't know if that's necessary anymore. But missing it in 2042 was bad because even the menu and loading screen was unlimited fps so 100% gpu/cpu usage all the time for no reason.

hair cards are still used, but they have extreme quad overdraw because it's a trillion cards on top of each other. just another part of the unotimization equation. want to cripple a modern engine, find a bunch of trees with transparency masks on leaves, and line your characters noisy hair up with it. it's one of the reasons grass blades are now models, and trees are all california 50 footers, so you can't catch too many leaves on screen lmao.

the trade off is things like mesh shaders, where you can deform models with textures, much better lighting, better control of lights and shadows, among other things. deferred rendering is mostly better, but the negatives are brutal. being able to plop in 50 real lights with no performance issues at all is amazing. with forward rendering, even a handful of real lights would kill performance.

the other problem is because of how powerful even dinky gpus are, and how engines like unreal are practically drag and drop, it encourages laziness. dlss and fsr increases that even more. i'm making a little unreal 5 game in my spare time, mostly just to optimize it for fun, and there's all kinds of tricks you can do that no one bothers with, even if it's built into the engine. for instance, all my trees use shadow proxies, which means there's another tree model under the original tree that casts shadow, but isn't rendered. so if you look up close, you'll notice the shadows have less branches, less leaves, and are looking a little nintendo 64, but with so many trees using "fake" shadows, you don't really notice at all, and the shadows only have to process around 2k polygons per tree, not 20k.

CoD is generally more about fast paced infantry warfare on smaller maps and has a very direct "you shoot the guy and he dies so you win" loop. Battlefield has that too but doesn't specialize in it, it also has big ass maps with tanks and humvees and choppers and airplanes you can pilot and it's much more focused on teamplay and scale and trying to 'feel' like a proper military experience.

CoD in its old days had you sprinting with a sniper in melee range quickscoping people, and now it has Nicki Minaj skins and battle royale modes. For all its flaws Battlefield has always done the "you're an actual soldier and this is war" thing with much more sincerity.

CoD is small maps, small teams, short rounds. Gameplay is a bit more arcadey with killstreak rewards which drop overpowered weapons to reward the player with tons of free kills, objective is usually just killing more of the enemy team.

BF is larger maps, large teams, longer rounds, vehicles (tanks, helicopters, jets). It's a bit more realistic but not anywhere close to a milsim, some entries have terrain destruction as a big feature, and many modes are objective based, either holding objective areas for more time than the enemy does, or advancing through a map by taking sectors from the defending team.

My best guess is polygon ordering.
There's two ways of rendering (partial) transparency, one is you just render the transparent polygon and blend it with whats already on the buffer, but if you render polygons out of order it breaks, and getting the order right can be complicated/expensive.
The other is to dither. I suspect once developers started getting into the habit of relying on dithering to the point they treat TAA as disabled being effectively unsupported, they just went fuck the polygon ordering just rely on dithering.

A bit of a reach, though.

Neat, thanks! Sounds a bit like BF recaptures more of that slower burn chaos you could get in old Novalogic games. Shame I assume BF6 won't have the thing I liked about 2142. I really liked titan mode and having the option to fuck around with big old airships and use them to cause problems on the ground, and of course rolling support and dropping an ammo bag on my team's flight deck so I could EMP the choppers until someone murdered me and got instantly punished by the unsuspecting rest of the team.

They have to do this shit, notice how they haven't addressed the clone wars situation from 2042 at all, nobody has talked about it or asked.
All these player skins they are offering already will be available on both teams, it's going to be clones wars all over again once there are some popular skins out. Player readability out the fucking window so they are already prepped with the obnoxious healthbars and colored diamonds on allies and enemies.

If you want it to be widely used, not really. The quality of an engine is most of the time inversely proportional to how widely applicable it is.
This is why specialized engines made for one type of game by one studios can be really good (Metro's 4A engine, or idtech) but generalist engines like Unreal often suck because the priority is wide ease of use.

Yes, it still exists, but is extremely underperformant compared to older games, this is because of Deferred Rendering. Older games used Forward Rendering, which is fast, allows for nice transparency and MSAA, Deferred rendering in comparison has none of these, the only advantage it has over Forward is the amount of dynamic light sources it can handle.
Nowadays most games use Forward+ Rendering, which theoretically should be the best of both words, but in reality it's just Deferred Rendering with some pretty bad transparency, scuffed MSAA implementation, and lower amount of dynamic lights that pure Deferred.
This is also the reason why foliage looks so fucking bad and needs TAA to hide the dithering, the transparency in it just sucks that bad and the industry just unanimously decided that dynamic light's "wow factor" was much more important than actually looking good

Image quality yes, but AI-driven temporal solutions break worse than TAA. They look way better than TAA when it works well, but when it doesn't it's much more distracting. Insane color bleed and ghosting. Makes sense to change problem assets to get around it.
TAA looks worse all the time but it's stable.

nobody wants to pay for a fucking premium pass just to play in one fucking 64 man server that is filled with bots 90% of the time.

It sucks fucking dick that bf3 is dead. But this is why we all hate the fucking battlepass/premium system, because it divides the playerbase and kills the game later on down the line. Calling people poor and 3rd worlders isnt going to bring players back to the bf3 lobbies.

It sucks that when bf6 releases all of us that did allll of those phantom assignments are going to lose our cool stuff.

>AI-driven temporal solutions break worse than TAA
That was true in the days of early DLSS/FSR but now it's outdated info.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Q87HB6t7Y
Not only is DLSS4 running circles around TAA in terms of image quality but FSR4 is on the track to do the same. You're literally better off using 1080p to 4k DLSS than you are using native 4k. There are no remaining ways in which TAA has better image quality, unless you're using really really low input or output resolutions with DLSS4/FSR4 such as 520p to 1080p.

As I said, this will have to run on something like FSR2 because it'll come out on consoles. You can't just say "it's great on high end hardware", assets are made for consoles. I agree that DLSS4 can be great (not always, it breaks in some games too like The Last of Us 2) and I even think DLSS3 is vastly better than native TAA.
But alas you're not running DLSS3 on 2/3 platforms this game will come out on. Even on PC most of the audience won't be able to handle 1080p->4K DLSS4, they'll be vram limited in this scenario.

DLSS4 is also worse than 3 for FF16. Playing it currently and the ghosting is out of control. But it's not officially supported so I don't hold it against the tech, just disabled the thing on Inspector and I use DLSS3 instead, which still looks great to me (still has some ghosting, but worth it)
