LoS1's not bad, but LoS2 should have been a lot better instead of the confused turd it is.

The N64 games would be the best if they weren't so terrible to control.

I wish they did. Other than the music though they really don't. CoD's familiar system is sort of neat, though. Innocent Devils were a neat idea even if the game is too tedious and combat too mindless for it to matter.

Not even close. Castlevania 64 is unironically the best 3d Castlevania. It does the best job at replicating the feel and twnsion of Castlevania. The only problem is that it doesn't play well without a good OEM N64 stick. Emuloids will never properly experience it.

Even Lament of Innocence amd Curse of Darkness were better then LoS though.

The n64 OEM stick has a very high degree of fine control. This matters a lot in certain games like Castlevania 64 where it expects you to be able to make fine adjustments to your character's position and orientation, or F Zero X for example. Less so with that game imo.

No, Lament has incredibly entertaining and melodramatic voice acting, the music is pure fucking kino, and hitting monsters and the sound effects are actually satisfying. Somehow the game is actually more violent than Lords of Shadow and dicking around with sub weapons and spell book combinations is fun. Sure the level design sucks but it's basically a beat em up brawler that's non linear. It's short and there's plenty of fun to be had. Stop misleading anon with your joyless attitude

I went back and tried to play this, and honestly it's a very frustrating experience/game just because of the wonky controls. For a GoW clone, it wasn't nearly as fluid/fun. I remember enjoying it on my first playthrough, but years later? Maybe something changed in me because now I think it's a trash game, at least in terms of gameplay.

Lament of Innocence is interesting. At first it seems very repetetive gameplay wise, but you kinda get in the zone with it and the aesthetic of the game. Hard to describe. I liked plinking the jump and heavy button to do the axe kick instantly om the ground. Its a fun game.

Briefly. There's no real depth or even flow to it, though. LoS1's lack of hit stun is a bizarre choice but there's still more going on. LoS2's combat is a fair bit better than either, whatever its other problems.
>joyless
No. Lament is just a total waste and seems to actually resent the player for wanting to engage with it given all the empty padding.

I played fzero gx which is faster, with gamecube's side stick, and again on emulator with 360 and 8bitdo controllers. You can tweak the dead zones, get hall effect sensor sticks that don't degrade, and honestly, I think side stick controller design is fine for fine control. Only one I couldn't get used to is the playstation dual shock layout for those games

Faster doesn't mean more precise. Being good at GX is more about stamina and timing (snaking and that sort of thing. X has a lot more funky precise angles you need to grind walls at to lift off the track in certain ways. The games were designed around their controllers.

64 stick is stiffer, and that makes angle changes HARDER, not easier, because stiffness slows your input down. In Castlevania 64 you have to change your angles a lot with slides and jumps. Newer controllers have better sensors to read your input vectors than n64 controller, and if you use a hall effect one, you can put 0 dead zone and you can literally have instant angle switch. I never had an issue with C64 on them

Curse of Darkness is more of a grindy dungeon crawling ARPG than a traditional Castlevania, so I understand it isn't popular with the CV audience. Of course it does not hit the same spot the classics did, but if you compare it to something like Dark Cloud and approach it when you're in the mood for it (ie something grindy with tons of collectibles and big numbers going up), it's also got a cool DMC-lite combat system that doesn't make it as boring as those kinds of games.

You know your level design is shit when a room where you press a button to raise some stairs next to it (and do nothing else in it) or one where you have to jump across a gap are your standouts.

The issue with the game is it's all corridors and your move speed is beyond slow.

It's not even close to trash, the game just has a few weak points.

The combat also sucks because your attacks are too stubby and slow and theres not much tech.
Which is the polar opposite of Lament which they nailed perfectly first try

I honestly thought that the game was just taking the piss at the start where you could walk the other way for ten minutes, only to find a potion.
Turns out that more or less IS the level design.

The ending is insane, really good stuff, itโ€™s a bit on the generic side at times due to it copying gow a bit, but the scale of the adventure, puzzles, bosses are great and the 50 minute boss fight in the DLC is great too

In the first few rooms of the house of sacred remains you get puzzle switches, enemy introductions, hidden upper areas, environmental secrets, trap rooms, bowling, and combat.
The entire damn game is that diverse. Youre a 20 IQ shartjeet rapefugee ESL mongoloid if you think Curse of hallways compares to this AT ALL

It appears if you have Lament save data. Youre meant to sell it but CoD has a bafflingly bad shop. Again, another thing Lament did far better

The level design is just more thoughtful. Even the first level (which isn't very good, to be clear) gives you intuitive objectives like opening the gates and varies things by having you jump across broken bridges or hopping down and back up. They control like ass and the camera sucks too much for me to really enjoy them but there's a real attempt at using 3D space to make an adventure game in there. The PS2 games are monotonous junk on that front and are embarrassing compared to some of the B and C list 3D action games of their time or before it. Lament has an occasionally decent room amongst its padding, but Curse is absolute garbage all the way through.

There are worse games but neither game is worth caring about. Lament even manages to have a shittier plot than usual.

What's so special about Dark Waterfalls? It's mostly square rooms with monsters and hallways like the rest of the game.

That's true, the levels in castlevania for the n64 are better designed. I like the game a lot, despite wonky graph is and terrible controls.
