Unironically official competitive match making. All those games with a high amount of community mods simply don't have it and the second they did, unofficial servers quickly decayed. The second official match making became a thing the games themselves were rebalanced and designed around it. Devs have more control like that also, creating less problems and more ..."targeted design". ... Fueling a perpetual underground gambling operations... To give an example..

Mods being axed by popular games because they either have copyrighted material, people not participating in the engagement algorithms, and/or outright pornography and racism, requiring more efforts from them to moderate (or the more practical reality, nobody moderates, especially in the later years of a game's life).
