>>717417730 (OP)according to some smarty pants guy in charge of the ad yes it would. Shame they took it upon themselves to advertise it that way first before consulting with anyone. Or so the story goes.
>>717417730 (OP)Were people really upset over this back in the day?
Like the ad is clearly meant to illustrate that the game would be so good that you’d worship John Romero.
>>717417914Wouldn't have been so bad if the game was actually good
>they don't even mention the name of the game
why are gamers such snowflakes?
>>717417914I'm sure people who knew who he was were slightly put off by it. But for me and most of us we just turned the page cause "who the fuck is John Romero?".
>>717417914More confused than anything given it doesn't even mention what game it is, just informs the reader they will be orally raped.
>>717417730 (OP)The marketer expected everyone to be aware of the culture of loud obscenity-filled DM trash talk and Romero's role in popularizing it. But with zero context it was just idiotic. For reference this is how Romero talked about development stuff in public
>Hey, everybody! Thanks a lot for downloading DOOM II -- that's really "cool".>We love it when we send evaluation copies to magazine editors and some piece of>shit uploads the thing. The DOOM II out there is the master copy we sent to GT>Interactive, our distributor. If your GUS sound doesn't work, it's probably>because your IRQ is > 7. Our sound code dork broke part of the sound support>while he was "expanding" it, so IRQs > 7 don't work, Pro Audio Spectrum owners>now have to run their SB-emulation driver (no more native support), etc. The>sound guy is a real shithead. All these fuckups are in v1.666 as well -->sorry. We have NO time to wait and hope that sound-dork fixes these problems,>as he's demonstrated in the past year and a half that he's incompetent.
Daikatana is a good game and is perfectly playable even without fixes. The 1.3 fanpatch is worth it for the slightly better companion pathfinding, the widescreen compatibility, the less crashes, and the fixed lightmapping of transparent textures. But other than that it's still at its best if you use cvars to turn off companion immortality, no savegems, no self-harm from plasma gun, no friendly fire and some other shit it changed to "fix" the gameplay.
>>717417730 (OP)Daikatana was in development hell, they didn't have anything finished to show in ads. But the company had money and people and they had already hired a PR guy who now didn't have anything to do. So he figured he'd advertise John Romero, who was a bit of a gaming personality, instead of the game. He came up with this ad and showed it to Romeo, who said he didn't like it. "I would never say that, that sounds gay." he's said about it in later interviews. But the PR guy kept pestering him about it and eventually he said fine do it, just leave me alone. And the rest is history.
The "Suck it down" really is *chef's kiss*
>>717417914people were not upset when they saw this ad, they were upset when they actually played the game.
You know why this ad campaign gets posted?
Because nobody would even recognise a screenshot from the actual game
>>717418116I think it's called 'Suck It Down'.
Romero's a fag, in any case.
