The only thing approaching Zelda in its contemporary time was Crystallis. It was a very good game for its time. Zelda itself was going though a kind of identity crisis with Zelda 2 and whether it should be focused more on the GB or NES.

Bruh I was born in the late 80s, between that and how Nintendo emulation is basically the only emulation anybody gives a shit about developing, there are literally no Zelda games I haven't played. Yes even Four Swords and FSA through an indulgent amount of accessory cables and having lots of friends with GBAs.

Games are plentiful. Games are cheap. Zelda is one of the most vaunted franchises out there, anybody that lived through the 90s and early 00s know how much other publishers were desperate to jump on Zelda's hype train.

3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 and Neutopia for Turbografx.
Both blatant but competent Zelda clones from different eras, not indie though.
I’d recommend Hyperlight Drifter, Death’s Door, Tunic, and Crypt Custodian though none are exactly Zelda.

I played the demo and it's really not like Zelda at all besides using bombs to blow up walls and being able to charge your attack. The fact that the dungeons don't have puzzles automatically makes it not like Zelda too since that's a massive part of Zelda's identity. I saw another anon say it's more like a Mana game than Zelda and he's probably right.

Oh neat, a Zelda-like indie thread. I wanted to ask, I'm working on a game modeled after the Gameboy Zeldas, but since there are two main characters that travel together I wanted to incorporate a system similar to the formations in Four Swords Adventures, just designed around two instead of four (so you know, back-to-back formation, side-by-side, free following, etc.). I know a lot of it comes down to execution, but does the base idea sound interesting?

I did like the formations but I think with fewer than three characters it's hard to really distinguish a vertical and horizontal orientation in terms of utility and area covered. You'd probably be better off looking more at the Wind Waker dungeon companions with swapping control of them with simple commands for free-follow/stay/follow in lockstep.
