It's been a while since the video game zeitgeist has had to think about COD vs Battlefield outside of every AAA multiplayer shooter shitting the bed in 2021(remember when Halo Infinite released its multiplayer early to try to capitalize on BF2042 crashing on impact and Vanguard's mediocre reception and hype nerf from being set in WW2?). I decided to just look up the relevant metrics and I knew COD sales numbers were basically insurmountable outside of GTA/RDR and Hogwarts Legacy for some reason.
But the more bewildering metric was that individual Borderlands games sell better than any Battlefield title, by millions. Black Ops 7's actual competition this year is fucking Borderlands 4.

bf was always a niche pc fps game relative to the popularity of console fps games. ea tried to turn it into a cod competitor and that was 15 years ago (mw3 vs bf3).

It was more Bad Company 2 vs MW2, since BC2 came out only a few months after MW2, and its campaign specifically included a few insults against MW2 like the heartbeat monitor gag.
