The point of them is for Valve to get $0.02 or more on every market transaction of Steam profile junk that people will buy and sell because it's generally only a few cents. Have a leftover $0.34 from a gift card and no games are that cheap? Buy the cards you're missing from a set and get a JPEG for your profile because whatever. Or sell the cards you have for a few extra cents. Either way, Valve pockets free money.
Trading cards also serve to accelerate the leveling up of the already highest-level Steam accounts because they get 99.9% or booster packs. I'm not sure how giving whales free stuff drives profit, considering those people are clearly willing to BUY cards, but whatever. It's not like I can lecture Valve on how to operate a free money machine.

The reason Bleach is universally more beloved by /v/ than One Piece or Naruto is quite simple: better villains, and more time spent focusing on them.
