You can play on normal first where you can get hit 3 times or use skills to bank your score so you dont lose it on hit, you are complaining you cant master the game right away but the game gives you tools to slowly get there if you want, if not 3hits mode is still a fun enough challenge

Too otaku-core so characters lack humanity and feel like they're just trying to appeal to the fans of overdone archetypes.
Relies too much on being edgy without feeling smart about its bleakness.
The first game is very mediocre even if it gets better later so most people didn't care to continue following the franchise.
Scoring system is not open ended enough to feel fun to master and if you ignore it the game is just dull.
And most importantly killing all the cooler girls way too early. No really, if you're gonna waifubait you're shooting yourself in the foot by doing this

The end product isn't really that similar to Mega Man but it is undeniably that they took some inspiration from it.
It is similar to comparing Ace Attorney to Danganronpa, one has a heart of gold despite being formulaic, the other is all style and no substance once you look past the sexy girls and edgelords.

I still don't fully get why people don't like it. I think its better than Megaman. I've heard the original DS release ran like shit and instantly turned people off, but I only ever played it on PC. And I can see the the heavy text of the early games, especially during gameplay, turning off a certain group of people who watched too much early 2000s youtube and took it as gospel, but I thought it was charming. Maybe people just like the simplicity of "running and shooting", but I always thought GV's "tap-tap-POP" gameplay was stylish and fun in its own way, and I think everyone whose actually tried it loved doing entire levels without touching the ground with Copen.

But I also think it lost its soul and gradually became worse over time in trying to change the things that were unique about it to be more in line with Megaman/X/Zero. Especially IX2.

It's a score attack series that has basically no level/enemy design when you ignore scoring but also doesn't really give any incentive for people to aim for high scores. Shit didn't even have an online leaderboard until GV3.

Why do people so commonly and thoughtlessly repeat that Gunvolt is like Mega Man even though it's plainly not true? Have people just never played another action platformer so it's their whole frame of reference?

Gunvolt is sick but they were never going to get that many people to play a score attack game where the appeal is optimising a run through a stage by playing it over and over, and the games aren't that good if you just play through them normally without thinking about the scoring mechanics

I'll die on the hill that GV3 is the best one though and the most intuitive for a new player, in that you'll be interacting with the scoring mechanic just because it's the most fun/cool way to play the game. Best bosses by far too. They flew too close to the Sun with that one and they've been repaying the karmic debt by releasing anodyne Metroidvania games ever since

Naw Z has a ton of joykiller filler like grinding for weapons and cyber elves which are only bypassed with zero collection easy scenario. Without at least leveled up saber the games are weak. ZX has it's own issues but none as damming, and it has the best msic in the franchiser824h
