Yeah that's the big issue here, the between turn textboxes are also clearly undertale-adjacent but it can get some enjoyment like fracktail blocking watchitt, the mercy system doesn't work because the two games are entirely different. a turn based RPG or SPM normally is not close at all to how undertale works and it's like putting a square peg in a round hole.
a fucking five nights at treasure island fangame had a random undertale moment too but at least it was a secret ending

who fucking said that though, SPM's main issue is just terrible pacing.

Honestly SPM just didn't have very good platforming and the puzzles weren't great either. I don't think there's anything wrong with the idea of a Paper Mario platformer but the actual platforming mechanics in SPM were very limited.
The fact that most of the Pixls were completely useless outside of like 1-3 sections of their assigned chapter and you had no reason to use them after that didn't help.
