The question is more so โdo I want to dedicate all that time to learning a single game?โ
Shmup value is comparable to fighting games or rhythm games in that theyโre very condensed experiences designed to ask the best of you for what ultimately amounts to an hour long game
Granted fighting games have the multiplayer element and rhythm games usually have big song lists/dlc, but still
Iโd say with shmups, you gotta just try a bunch out until you find one that really clicks for you and remains fun regardless of how many times you beat it
For me, that was Ketsui, so the PS4 port was a no-brainer for me ($50 for literally ONE shmup, but so well ported and with lots of extra modes)
