I was watching Rock Lee and Rock Lee Shippuden but they screwed up the title and called it Naruto. Do they not know the main character's name? Anyway, for some reason, it takes 21 fucking episodes to introduce the main character and his rival Neji. These are the characters the story is centered around so I thought it was weird. It was also weird that for being the two central characters, they practically never fought on-screen outside of filler sparring. Obviously the theme of the story is about hard work overcoming natural talent, but I thought it was strange how Lee lost every single fight he was ever in except for the time he beat his clone, and even then that means he STILL technically lost. He really fucked up Gaara though, even though Gaara won and crippled him to the point they had to write the main character out of doing anything for like 80 episodes. But he showed up to save the day for a side character who happens to share the same name as the mistitled series. And by save the day, I mean he distracted the bad guy and then got saved by Gaara and then nearly died to the guy who died of cancer right before the killing blow.

But Lee and Neji continued to be relevant, like when they would sometimes appear in an arc. I remember the Pain arc, how Lee and Neji weren't there when it happened and came back to a crater of a village. Really makes you think. And when Neji died to be a shield for some random fodder characters, Lee was shown to be sad several episodes later when the show remembered he existed. I was sad, almost as sad as the time his love interest Sakura knocked him out when he was accompanying her in some filler arc about her teammates. Anyway, I think Kishimoto really failed to understand his series and themes. It's about working really really hard and being able to achieve anything if you try hard enough. That's the American way and why the series resonates with so many Americans, because it says that we're not losers, we just haven't tried yet.

I would love to say that potential is why I hate this show but I think it's the antithesis of it. That many people believe it could have been good but I think it was fated to be shit. I fell for actually watching Naruto when I was a kid because the early Zabuza arc was great and I thought that Naruto would actually eventually cover actual NINJA things instead of just being random magic and punching shit.
And when that wasn't apparent, I was really hoping the show would reveal some twist that the Ninja Villages are just small rural hick villages and the rest of the world was dominated by larger sci-fi advanced cities ruled by cybernetic samurai and daimyo, and that the ninja were just really small-time compared to those guys and they have to overcome something that's far bigger than them.
Instead the series started being less and less about Ninja while still calling everyone and everything a fucking Ninja. It got progressively fucking annoying that a Ninja wasn't some special stealth unit, but apparently every fucking soldier is a ninja, every village is a ninja village. Every war is a fucking ninja war, and Samurai are just glorified fodder bodyguards that are technically also ninja in a fucking weird way. It's actually fucking retarded. For some bizarre reason, Ninja have the same role as regular soldiers, samurai and Omnyodo while also having the role of a Shinobi. I only really liked the Ninja Storm games, but barring that, I pretty much dropped it.

Hell, even now, I don't think there's ever been an interesting Ninja manga/anime set in the modern or near-future period that I can think of, only some historical period era Edo stuff (which I don't mind, but I like the urban ninja aesthetic from the 80s). The closest is Under Ninja, which I really like so far and it's pretty much what I wanted, but I don't trust Kengo Hanazawa as a writer because he has a track record for writing good manga with the worst and most retarded possible fucking endings.

That's the only fight where I remember pretty much the entire sequence of events. The second Zabuza fight already kinda sucked since everyone got bailed out by Naruto hulking up, a shit trend that would continue throughout the entire show.
The first fight is what hooked everyone on the show. Naruto's power there was not some deus ex machina inside him, but his power of outside-the-box thinking.
Everyone had his place in that arc. Kakashi and Zabuza were complete monsters that couldn't be touched, Sasuke was shown as skilled in the traditional ways, Naruto surprised with creativity and Sakura was just there to flash her tits and cry (I might misremember her part somewhat) because she's a yucky girl and girls can't fight.
